Hello all , got a knocking noise on the o/s/f wheel area, changed top and bottom balljoints, anti roll bar bushes and links adjusted wheel bearings but to no avail, is there anything bolted inside the wing that could come loose and knock over bumps? it's driving me insane. 2001 s class w220 320CDI

Brake backplate or carrier..antiroll bar bushes.

Top joint maybe?

We need to kow whether the knock is on Bump or Rebound..

Just try rocking the car side to side violently.

It has airmatic so it is possible its the damper.

There are many joints in that arear that can wear and cause a knock. Check them all.

Thanks all for the input, the knock is on the rebound, it doesn't knock when rocked, but even over the smallest of bumps it clunks, i've changed every bush i can see and the top and bottom ball joints and tried levering the wheel up and down while feeling for play, but it's being a bugger to pinpoint, i thought of the shock absorber also but it's an expensive guess if it's not that:eek: incidently when the wheel was levered it did throw up some play in the hub bearing which i adjusted out but the noise is still there, it just sound like something loose and clunking:confused:

Remove the damper and go for a drive, just be careful.

i'll try it tomorrow, thanks for the help, ill keep you posted , if i remove the damper do i need to plug the air pipes to it or leave them loose?also thanks for the glowplug help too, never had any probs for years then everything goes at once, typical!!!

if it has a under tray have a look at that as well ...mines loose and is knocking .... no sounds when rocked:rock: from side to side or up and down

took the damper off today and went for a carefull drive, still got the knocking, so going to strip the arch out tomorrow and see whats behind it, i'll keep you all posted

Do you have an exploded diagram of the area that would give you an idea of what's there that you haven't looked at yet?

I misdiagnosed a knocking o/s/r drop link when the tapping noise was caused by a loose acceleration sensor. I think.:)

sorry television i meant the strut, i then chocked the space with a piece of timber

just to put this post to bed, i finally found the time to strip the inner front wheel arch out today, i found the compressor hanging by it's rear mount and hitting the front torsion bar, luckily all the bushes and springs were trapped in the under engine /arch pan, refitted it all and went for a ride, RESULT no more bloody annoying rattling, then the compressor kicked in and the whole o/s/f of the car vibrated even the pedals!! oh how i laughed:rolleyes: must have knackered rubbers/springs, so ordered new bushes and springs etc today, i vow to have a silent car one day!!!! Many thanks to all who gave advice and to my wife for being tolerant of my rantings and ravings and occasional torrents of four letter words. (thought. Arn't women brilliant at throwing a deaf one) LOL
