kompressor engines. whats the difference?

lets be honest its for those who like to penny pinch or brag about their mpg's
in the states where petrol cost isnt an issue deisel is unheard of, its even banned in some states(i wonder why?)
will ferrari ever build a deisel ?,or aston?. no because mpg aside it is still s..t

Penny pinching? buying a merc diesel is penny pinching?

And no , ferrari or Aston won't have diesels , but thats kinda way off the mark with this group of cars your talking about.

You talk about the 200 cdi being slow , it wasnt so long ago that mercedes didnt do turbodiesels , in fact , it wasnt so long ago that you could get a 190D 2.0 without a turbo.

Turbodiesel engines are smoother , more efficent and offer a broad torque range from a useable band rather than high reving petrol engines.

Try a more suitable size diesel to the class of car your looking at , the C200 CDI is there purely for cost cutting for company car tax and does well at its job. The 220 CDI is the equivelent to the C180 Kompressor.

Move higher up to a 2.7 or 3.2 or even the new 3.0 twin or tri turbo CDI engine and im sure you wouldnt go back to your 1.8 petrol.

oh yes! drove a 200cdi and couldnt believe anyone would consider putting such a noisy sluggish engine in an executive,or any, car.
i really dont understand the publics demand for deisils and can only put it down to manufacter hipe because on paper you need to do a huuuge milage to even break even!
How is that then when MB diesel is cheaper when new than an equivelant petrol? Oh you must mean secondhand as they are usually worth about £2k more.

1: cost and wastefulness isn't an issue, 2: the diesel sold in the States is such poor quality most modern engines can't run on it.

So what will they do when the Bugatti comes out with a diesel?
People said MB wouldn't put a diesel in an SL. Well watch this space.

Well its only recently that the c-class 4 pot petrols were made refined (twin pulse technology), and apparently the new 4 petrol pots in the a-class and b-class are noisy as well...diesels will be quieter in the near future, read the reviews on the new BMW 320D yet??

Maybe its hype, but people in the states don't know much whats going outside of their own country in most things anyway, so wouldn't blame them if they didn't know of MB,BMW, Jags with diesel engines do exist. No wonder they consume the most of the world's resources with thier huge petrol V8 and V12's, and incidently are the world's biggest's polluters. Perhaps it's our duty to educate them in this a bit. By the way, diesel emissions are better if not on par with petrol emissions nowadays...

Maybe Ferrari, Aston may never build a diesel sports, but MB are already leading the way with the SL400CDi, read the performance figures on that beast yet?

Some food for thought....

I really dont see the point in all these diesel v petrol arguments. Cant we all just accept that some people prefer petrol engines and others prefer the economy and driving characteristics of a diesel?

Whatever the engine, its still an MB!

Totally agree. This debate will never end.
