This probably seems a really daft question but i see so many mercs with Kompressor written on the rear.

How do you know if your car is a Kompressor?Does it have to have it written on the rear?

And also, what exactly does it mean?

kompressor means supercharged in german i think
180, 200 230k, e55 w211

no 320. in fact too much to name

So should i asume that my c230 has a Kompressor engine?

not it if it has a 2.5 v6.
if yours is an 06 i think you have a 1.8 kompressor engine or the 2.5 v6 without a compressor as the c230k only came with a 1.8 or a 2.3 kompressor

Cool.

Just so i understand, what kind of an engine would need a Kompressor?

How does it benefit?

How come a 2.5 litre engine wouldn't have one?

I am pretty new to Mercedes cars,so have many questions as each day passes.

It is a about marketing as well as emmisions. with a kompressor, you get the same amount of power from a smaller engine.
if you can make a bigger cleaner engine you do not need to fit a kompressor for the same power,

c230k

1.8 k about 190hp came about 2004
2.3k older engine, about 192hp been around since 1995
2.5 v6 about 200hp newest of the lot

The supercharger gives you that extra boost when you put your foot down.:D

I generates a lot more torque from the engine aswell.

It's not so much about what engines need a supercharger but how much power MB wants the engine to develop and how that will fit into the car's model range.

So by not having the Kompressor, does it make your car have higher emmisions?

The reason i ask this is my C230 06 is considered to have higher emmisions ,therefore from next year i will be paying £400pa for road tax.

(The MB direct bloke forgot to mention this small factor when selling me the car!)

I mean, even the BMW 330 is in the lower tax bracket which i find hard to believe.

A standard supercharger will make it less efficient, since the engine is having to give power to the pump. Some more advanced ones have a clutch on the supercharger to disengage when not in use. (VW have one, not sure about MB)

Your car suffers from having a V6 engine, that will have more mechanical losses than a 4 cylinder.

I'm not sure why the BMW 330 is in a lower band. Sometimes tyre choice will reduce CO2 by just enough to bring it into the next band down.

buy an older car, older mercs are pretty solid and if registered b4 march 2001 the road tax is £185

not having the kompressor will not give you higher emmisons, but having a V6 as opposed to a 1.8 kompressor will certainly give you higher emmissons as well as having an auto as opposed to a manual.
Is yours a w203 or 204? i cannot recall them sticking a v6 in the w203 and calling it a c230. A c240 yes, or yours must be a rare one.

The strange thing is,by buying a newer car,you would think the opposite.

I believe it's a W203.Registered oct 06.

W204 is the very latest shape, isn't it?

yes it is a w203. one of the latest engines put in it.
I though your CO2 was 221. that engine in the W204 pays £300 in tax.
what does the co2 figure say on your V5? and what body style / trim is yours

The manual says the emmisions are 222-229 g/km.The DVLA website changes the tax band at 226 g/km.

The V5 says 229 g/km.

The DVLA site says the c230 is 221 g/km.Do you think they go by there own figures?

Mines the Avantgarde sports pack.

I saw one with 'PROFESSOR' on the back the other day. Tsk.

Is that avantgarde or sport? sport will have 6 spoke alloys and an AMG front air scoop and a rear lip spoiler. avantgarde will have 5 spoke alloys
They go by the V5.
