Laptop overheated?

Mrs Esox left my ageing laptop on its side all night (with the heat-sink air vent blocked by the carpet).
Came home today to find the fan running but after picking it up the fan turned off and now it`s completely dead and won`t turn on.

Is it toast?
Whats the most likely thing to have happened to it?

Thanks,
Mr Esox.

sounds like the CPU overheated........if it was more than 2 years old it's hardly worth fixing IMHO......is it covered by your home insurance?

New decent laptops start at £250 now
**Free Cloud Wi-Fi** HP 550 Laptop, Celeron M 550 2GHz, 160GB HDD, 1GB RAM, 15.4" TFT, DVDRW, Vista Home Basic UK - Ebuyer

edit: from today onwards if you buy a new PC with Vista Premium you'll get a free upgrade to Windows 7 in October...I think

Woah, those are seriously cheap, might get one myself!

or a Intel Core 2 Duo for £339
**Free Cloud Wi-Fi** HP 550 Laptop, Intel Core 2 Duo T5670 1.8GHz, 160GB HDD, 2GB RAM, 15.4" BrightView TFT, DVDRW Lightscribe Writer, Bluetooth, SD Card Slot, Vista Home Premium, Office Ready (60 day trial or 25 uses) - Ebuyer

I'm not saying Ebuyer are always the cheapest, but just a good starting point to gauge price.

If you're flexible with spec and happy with clearance stock then:

Tell us what applications you run and I'm sure you'll be given some suitable laptop recommendations.

Looks the business......with that spec there's no doubt it will surf the net well :)

Last time I used a Toshiba laptop it was very well made.

OK,so the new lappy is doing fine, but i`d like to retrieve some of my pics from the HDD on the old Toshiba, then when i`ve done that format it and use it as an external HDD for extra storage/backup etc.
Sound feasible so far?

This is the HDD i`ve taken out of the expired laptop.

Is this HDD the SATA type, and will it fit this box?

If that box isn`t suitable can someone be kind enough to find one on e**y and post a link?
Also is any additional software required to see whats on the HDD once it`s installed in the external box?

Cheers,Esox.

no yours is a ide hdd and needs an 2.5" ide case

Oh,OK then,is this the one i`d need?

OK,so i`ve got the external HDD in the caddy and can see all my files`n`stuff on there, but am having trouble accessing some of it - it says i need to `take ownership` of some files before i can view them.
So i go through the parlarver of doing all that via all the various files only to get the message `invalid image` when viewing the pics???
Is this because the files were in a named user account rather shared?

Thoughts;
Is there an easy way to boot the OS on the HDD in the caddy rather than that in the laptop by changing the BIOS to boot from USB and then transfer all my named user account files to shared (and thus easily accessed later on)?

Can i temporarily hook up the old HDD to my new laptop via an IDE to (i assume)SATA cable/converter then swap over the files?

I may be talking complete cr*p here,i`m not very computer literate.....

The saga continues......
I want to boot the OS installed on the old laptop Hard drive.

I put the laptop HDD in the caddy and tried to boot it - no go.I don`t think you can boot from USB.

So,i bought one of these from ebay;

.....and stuck it on the laptop HDD and installed it into a desktop with the other HDD disconnected and switched it on hoping that the PC would boot up from the laptop HDD.
It didn`t.
Why doesn`t the laptop HDD boot in the desktop PC?
Is it anything to do with the four pins on the r/h end of the HDD (see pic a few posts up) not being connected to anything on the connector of the 2.5 to 3.5 IDE adapter?

Spec:
[FONT=Times New Roman, Times, serif][FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]A must have kit to transfer data from a laptop hard drive to a desktop computer

You cant just put the drive into another PC and expect it to boot off it like that.

Your old disk probably wont have the hardware support to even see the SATA connection or have the correct mass storage drivers, nor will it have a whole host of other drivers.

Why do you want to boot off it anyway? Just attach it as a slave and copy the data off. If you need to take ownership do it so at folder level, wont take long to do.

No the 4 pins are for jumpers to set the drive as slave or main drive. If you go on line you should be able to access the jumper settings for your particular disc.----alt---- you may/may not be able to configure your PC to boot from a USB device -you will have to change a bios setting but it depends on the bios.

Exactly - I thought the requirement was to copy some pics off the old drive. Simplest way of doing this is put it back in the USB caddy and plug into the new laptop (or desktop PC).
