Not always
Well , after buying the car around October of last year ( so long ago that I can't remember exactly when ) I finally took delivery of the 1999 W124 E250D during the early hours of this morning !

According to the V5C , it was first registered and declared new on 15th Feb 1999 and comes on an S plate , with the Mercedes-Benz of India sticker on the landing panel .

The car was transported down to Edinburgh late last night , where the vendor had another car to collect and take back up to the far North .

Unfortunately , due to a mishap loading it onto my tow dolly , the front bumper of the W124 was damaged , so ideally I will look for a replacement bumper but this is low on the list of priorities - getting the car legal and roadworthy after its two years on SORN is the first order of business ( new battery , tyres , brake pads & possibly discs , repair to exhaust which has been broken where pipe enters back box but not rotten , new wiper blade - then whatever else MOT picks up ) .

Bodily , apart from the bumper mishap ( I took delivery on Fri 13th after all ) it is very good with no rust evident anywhere , one stone chip on the bonnet , the star missing from the bonnet and a small dent just below the rear number plate .

Under the bonnet , everything is reasonably clean and tidy , if not spotless .

The grey leather interior is almost as new , with only some very light scuffing to the drivers seat bolster , which should re Colour OK . The air con works and there is a Sony audio unit with 10 disc changer in the boot , plus a Nokia car kit which will be replaced by the Bury one for the iPhone .

No photos as yet since I got the car home to my mum's at 3am , and it needs a good wash to do it justice - but these will be uploaded when I get the chance .

I will post updates as and when .

Besides picking up the W124 , I also got a pile of stuff for my W126's , including a genuine new front wing still in primer with MB stickers ; front & back bumpers for my 500 which he had spent a fortune putting all new chrome onto , a replacement pre facelift front bumper for my 280SE as the one on the car had been damaged before I got it , and a boot full of small parts I have yet to go through .

this sounds great, looking forward to the updates
what sort of mileage has it covered?

It just turned 100K while being towed down from the North , now sitting around 100,200

I should have said , reg document shows 3 owners , although first keeper was the importer and second keeper acquired car two weeks later !

The guy I bought the car from has had it about four years - so really only two owners .

Service book stamped up to 90K : dealerships at first , then indies , then a couple of local garages . I will be doing my own servicing .

This is my first foray into the world of Diesel cars - although really it will be her Ladyship's car and is getting registered in her name . I will run it for the first few weeks to iron out any bugs .

It is manual , by the way .

Don't hold back. I'm sure I'm not the only one who doesn't mind looking at a few dirty pics!! :D

I'm hoping to get back across ( my mum's house is 60 miles away ) on Sunday with my trailer to pick up the bumpers and other bits , so should get the chance to give it a wash and take some pics then .

The car was meant to be Jan's Christmas present last year to replace her ailing Hyundai Coupe ( which I hate with a vengeance ) so she is keen to get a look at it too !

Dark blue - very similar to Nautic Blue , but I don't think it is Nautic Blue .

I had a manual 190 D 2.5 I had to sell because it was too slow, this will be slower.

I foresee leisurely progress in your future.

:) It isn't for me , it is for SWMBO and leisurely progress will suit her just fine :D

I'm sure it will be a safer mode of transport for her and our 3 year old son than the Hyorrendous Coupe she currently drives

Interestingly , I did a vehicle enquiry on the DirectGov site ; it shows the date of first registration as 15/2/1999 , and the V5C declares it new at first registration , but DirectGov then goes on to state the year of manufacture as 1977 .

I know it was sent out to India as a kit , then assembled there - so the kit must have been manufactured in 1977 , then sat around for two years before being assembled !

I wonder if the even later registered ones were also manufactured in 1977 ?

My typo - even though I typed it 3 times , it does state 1997 .

The kit won't have sat around, the car will once built.

Does it matter?

A OM605 with manual box will go Ok. The W201 used the lower performance OM603 engine.

The OM605 thrives on revs being a 20valve engine.

Here are a few pictures , courtesy of my sister after she washed it .
