Leaking diff

a second hand diff will also be leaky most likely... best bet it to remove it and change the seals... its not rocket science, any decent garage should do it or have a local gearbox place that will do it...

I think my local garage just want me to scrap the car and get something a bit newer.

I must admit old car ownership is not for everyone.

why would they want that? surely the more problems you have is more money for them????

Sometimes no amount of money compensates for the ballache of a "problem" car. The one that, no matter how simple the job should be on paper, always turns into an utter f*cking nightmare.

The problem is that there are some garages who cannot do much more than empty the ash trays.
We can do better than that !!

I didn't get far finding anyone to re do the diff, so I think I will scrap the Mercedes and either buy a newer one, possibly a 124 or a Nissan.

There is a place in Preston, Lancs (not too far from you) who will re build it using only Merc parts.

Can Dronsfields not get you one - ask for Ian.

Time to find a new garage . Your W123 is a better engineered car than most later offerings .

Otherwise , try Mark Cosovich - the UK's leading W123 restoration specialist - he's in Swansea and his phone numbers are 01792 864888 or 07714 089936

Mark is a true enthusiast of these models and will either rebuild your original diff or replace it at your choice . He is generally happy to talk at length and give advice over the phone .

He always has a number of W123 cars breaking for spares , but also has an extensive stock of new parts beyond what the dealers can supply .

Got to be worth at least a phone call !

There is a Merc Specialist in Southport. Its on an industrial estate. Darned if I can find the name though even with Google helping me.

I wanted a garage to do it, none of them wanted to fit parts I supplied.

But Xmas here has been a bit busy, what with the wife's cat going missing and my daughters TV packing up.

Still there's a man coming around on tuesday to look at my daughter's Bush and hopefully someone will have seen my wife's pussy.

I may still get the 123 fixed, but I've always been a fan of older Nissans, and there's someone 2 doors away who wants the Mercedes.

I'll see what he says, it was my uncle Barry's car so it would be nice if it could be mended.

Sorry , i know it is probably stressful in your house at the moment , but the turn of phrase made me laugh out loud !!

Good luck with fixing the car.

Sorry what with my leaky flange and the cat going missing, it's been a bit hectic, weathers terrible too, dreading coming home to find a wet pussy waiting for me.

The last diff I rebuilt cost about £300 ish.

I'm not sure I could spend that much on my old bus, does that include fitting?

The beauty of DIY. Two new bearings, two new seals, half a day and Bob's your Uncle.
