LED Headlight bulbs

I thought the legal limit was 65w on road car's?....Manuel is included to help the assembly process! Now that is impressive!:D

Wont be legal, same as Aftermarket Xenons, the housing doesnt diffuse the light pattens correctly.

It's 40W per 'bulb', not 80. That's for both.

Also that includes the draw of the fan and inefficiencies. I wasn't aware of any CREE chip that'd take even close to that for a single diode (I can only see one per bulb?)

EDIT: Closest I can find to the "CREE-XM-U2" is this: http://www.cree.com/LED-Components-and-Modules/Products/XLamp/Discrete-Directional/XLamp-XML2

That's rated at 10w. I think the 40w per lamp rating is an "equivalence".

These are available on ebay for almost 1/3rd of the price.

The brightness of 8000 lumens is a classic "wet finger in the wind" figure, which is equivalent to 6-8 times the brightness of a Halogen headlight. They won't be anything like that bright.

Maybe the Chinese have devalued the Lumen?

What isn't explained is if they throw a "LightBulb Failed" error. I've emailed 4 or 5 sellers and they have all said the error light will come on.

There's also other snags. The heatsink arrangement berhind the bulb probably won't fit in most Mercedes Headlight housings, and worse, they contain a mechanical fan.

The stated life is 50,000 hours, which is possible (being charitable) but the fans certainly won't last that long.

Other designs are available where the heatsainks are large copper braids, which you tuck into the Headlight housing. That would be the version I would go for if I could get assurances that non-error light versions were available..

I'll take my chances with the Legality, assuming I can get through the MOT....
