As the title suggests. The ones I have at the moment appear to be the cheap and cheerful type. They charge ok but when in use ( with a water pump) they seem to lose their charge quickly so I'm wondering if you lads can recommend a good battery

we have a numax in our caravan. seems pretty good. get the highest AMPH you can, depending on your intended use.

I've got an ABS brand battery (75 Ah) that's still OK after about 8 years! Can't remember where that came from, but also got two Exriders (115 Ah) that are 3 years old (main caravan battery plus a spare):

Key thing with any leisure battery is not to let it sit discharged for any length of time, and preferably not to let it drop below 12.0V (which is about 75% discharged - 11.9V is fully discharged). Horsey people use them to run electric fence units - let them go completely flat, leave for a week or two before they notice ... not surprisingly the batteries usually don't live very long!

Incidentally, make sure you have a charger intended for leisure batteries - don't use a car one, they are usually too aggressive.

Thanks Bill. I use them to run water delivery pumps from the van and at the moment they run down to about 11.4 volts which is too low. They are charged via the vans alternator and take a full charge no problem but I think they are just crap batteries

Leisure batteries aren't designed to be fast-charged like car/van batteries ... so that could be your problem. IMO you'd be better off charging them from the mains (overnight or whatever) via a suitable charger.
