when I was a youngster in the 1950's & 1960's and we wanted to put spot, fog lights etc on our cars, everything at to be as per the law, ie., a set height from ground level,a min/max from centre to outside width, a min/max size, min/max wattage, only white light to the front, and red light to the rear, (they did start to allow reversing light as long as one had a warning light attached to the switch), Im all for how it is now, but was just wondering when the all these restrictions were relaxed.

Have they.?
All lights should fall under the construction and use regulations and position and colour are defined.

Construction and use: Lighting

If you specifically mean a reversing lamp tell-tale, then that is not required where the lamp is activated automatically, but a manually activated lamp should have one.
