Linguatronic Retrofit

Anyone got a list of instructions for the W220?

I've just spoken to Neil at Braybrook (nice bloke who really knows his stuff)
and he says VCS on the old shape S Class is quite limited.
Apparently you cannot set navigation routes with it. All you can do is say, "navigation" and it will bring up the nav screen, but that's it. You need to enter addresses manually.

He says phone and radio/CD instructions are quite good, but nav doesn't do anything more than bring up the nav screen (on a W220).

I could do with seeing a complete list of actual instructions before I commit to this mod.

You can use it for the phone on all functions, same with CD,Tape,TV and Radio for anything. With Navigation you can only bring it up on the screen and no more than that. If you try and tell her where you want to go, anything will happen.

That's a shame because I'd be more likely to use VCS for nav input rather than any of the other functions.

Telephone address book is available via MF steering wheel and CD selection is only a simple button press or two, so not overly useful via voice instruction.

I think it would be nice to have for poseability but probably enough to justify the cost.

I find it easier to just push the button for what I want to do, rather than argue with her

On my car that was £375 extra from new, if I used the phone all day then possible, but I hardly ever use the phone, so NO, its not worth it

OK thanks, think I'll give it a miss.

Now to investigate putting a digi TV tuner in............

Just use a domestic one, the type that have the external power supply in the plug, they are all 12v + ground

OK couple of questions regarding this:

1) How would you change channels? Do you wire in a magic eye?

2) I read somewhere that the MB one needs/used four aerials. What do you do about aerial connections for a domestic one? Will the shark fin thingie on my roof be usable?

i got stalk s/w on my 220 1999 but linguatronic do notwork can i do upgrade

Does the car have linguatronic installed and it's not working or it just has the stalk but not the rest of the hardware?

The 4 aerials are used by the radio tuner and are split to go to the TV
its easy enough to make up a interface capacitor coupled to give 1 out.

The shark fin is for the phone I believe.

A remote eye will do the job, and yes you use the remote, as with the £650 MB retro

OK.
Need to peel back some covers in the boot of my car to see how easy this all looks. Will prob have a look at weekend.

So where have you located your eye?

how can i find out?

Enter your VIN number in the Russian MBClub website and it will tell you what was fitted in the car when it was built. Or PM me your chassis no. and I'll have a look for you.

Here's a link to the website@

If you have the stalk I would have assumed you have linguatronic. Is this stalk on the right hand side of the wheel at about 2 'o clock position?

That eye is tiny (if i'm looking at the right thing?!?)
Where do you get them from and how much?

The magic eyes that i use with my sky box are massive. Do not want to put one of those on my dash.

So you don't think it's really worth it?
I think it awkward to put a value on any option. My answer will always be, if you like it and can afford it, go for it.

How can anyone justify owning a Mercedes-Benz  :) Or should I say, how can anyone justify owning a BMW? :D

I have hundreds of the things, just take the one out of the digi box and extend the leads.

The Sky link is not quite the same thing

Well the previous owner of mine did just that, I do have fun showing people, and It amuses the grand children for hours

Good point, nicely put.

To me it's not so much affordability. (Well not entirely, anyway) It's about how satisfied will I be after parting with the cash. I don't at all think that Benz's are good value for money, but the smile I have on my face when I'm "poncing" around in mine (just about) justifies the costs. (Of course I'm a snob!! I stopped denying that ages ago :D )

If I spent 700 pounds on having VCS installed on my S, I would forever be feeling annoyed at myself for having spent on something that doesn't put a smile on my face. And to me that would be wasteful.

One of my (many) problems is that I think waaaaaay to much when it comes to money. That's why I love these forums. You guys have saved me quite a bit of dough over the years.
