Lipped Discs

B180 CDI SE
Just had a 4 year service on my B180 CDI SE Auto. Car's done 31000 miles. Been told the discs will need replacing probably on next service as ALL FOUR are lipped. Front pads have 70% wear, back ones 50%. Seems unbelievable all have developed this since last service was only 6000 miles ago, as I've not done as many miles as usual in last year. Is it unusual? Thanks

It depends on driving style etc, town driving will involve more braking and higher wear rates of pads and discs.

Modern pads are asbestos free and are more abrasive leading to higher wear of both pads and discs. Also around 40,000 from a set of front pads is hardly excessive.

The wear hasn't happened since the last service, it's been gradually wearing all the time.
The wear tolerance is 1mm per face.

Thanks to DSM10000 & Dieselman for prompt replies. My main concern is the discs, not pads, which I'd expect to be replaced shortly.
Just wondered if lipped discs were a common problem.
Thanks again.

Lipped disks are not a "problem" as such. They are a normal part of wear and tear on modern cars.

There's a fair amount of profit from dealerships so if they are doing the work then haggle for a better price.

I presume the front pads are the 2nd set from new, as I wouldn't expect the rear pads to be wearing faster than the fronts.

As already mentioned, you need to know the disc thickness.

If the lipping is excessive but the disks are still thick enough, ten minutes with a grinder will fix them easily. They can interfere with free movement of the pads if too bad.
cheers

The car is 4yrs. old and and based upon your historical usage it will have done less than 40k miles at its next service if that is at 5yrs. old.

Main dealers are known for wanting to change pads and discs sooner than many of us would consider necessary.

You should consider finding a reputable indie to look after your car......a good indie will not spend your money unnecessarily and will not replace consumable parts prematurely. For me consumable brake parts are not necessarily an item that needs to be done simultaneously with a service.......they can be treated as a separate issue to be done as and when needed to be done.

This is easily done especially once a relationship is forged with one's indie

It would have to be extreme wear and have very worn pads for that to be an issue.
As the tolerance is ~1mm the worst that could happen is an audible warning of worn out pads, which would need to be extremely worn for that to happen.

Thanks again to wemorgan, balge, MicB & Dieselman for your useful advice. This is my 4th Merc & annual mileage is normally higher, though mostly in similar circumstances. Have never come across the Lipping problem before.
Thanks again. J.

Engineering training, I can't see a flash and not deburr it...

I regularly check disks for lipping, especially when fitting new pads to old disks, but then I never worry about 'best before' dates either
