Location of the Transmission Fluid Changer

Is the black somewhat geometrically shaped receptacle at the front end of the engine for replinishing transmission fluid?

The receptable in question is located at the front of the engine... looking towards the engine from the front... to the right of the two fans... just right front end of the engine block.

My auto is not switching gears and I wanted to add transmission fluid if possible, at least to get it to the service center.

Thanks

nope - thats the power steering

auto box filler is also the dipstick - back left of the engine bay as you look at it. unlikely to have a dipstick in it - prob a cap with 'mb service only' or similar.

1/4 litre at a time if i were u - and go straight to the service centre - the oil in gearboxes is NOT std dextron III

I can still drive the auto, but only about 35mph@3000-3500rpm to 40mph@3500-4000rpm. The dealer is about 12 miles away. From what you suggests, I should go on to the dealer (maybe drop off in the middle of the late night while hardly any autos around)?

Any probability of severe damage? Better to tow?

Sounds like limp-home mode? Could be for a number of reasons, not necessarily gearbox.

towing is worse...

unlkely to damage anyhting imho.

nicmann has a point - could be LH mode.
