As luck would have it, not. The locking wheel but has sheared off on my ML. I popped into a couple of places local to me and none wanted to know.

Has anyone used of the tools like these and how do you sort out the spinning collar?

When that happened to me I found a local place that sold alloy wheels and he had all the gear to remove the security bolts.

Pop down the A3 to Horndean to Olly at PCS or Cole at MBS, bet they'll sort you out!

Take it to any decent garage and they can drill it out

Thanks for your suggestions. I must have been to a dozen places today with plenty of tutting and chin scratching. I've booked the thread Doctor for next week to remove all 4 lockers. Fingers crossed he can do them.

Generally not a DIY thing unless you are competent.

Many high street well known places can undertake but charge accordingly. Even MB will undertake but understand that you have to leave the vehicle with them.

If you know any less salubrious tyre/wheel places - they are quicker, cheaper and very well versed in these matters.

Sorry, posted too late. TIP always ensure hand tight of locking nut.

You say 'sheared off..' so the actual 'locking part ' is no longer an issue ? you simply have a snapped off stud protruding from the hub ?

If the spinning collar is still there its a 5 minute job with correct tool. A Sealy SX299 kit will do it, I am surprised none of the places you visited had one, it's only £170 incl VAT.

A quick update and in the event anyone else comes across their locker shearing off or is missing, etc. The Thread Doctor came out yesterday and took them off. Total cost was £120.

Well worth the money for the hassle involved.
The state of those OEM bolts is just shocking!
MB really do need to improve the finish on these wheel bolts.

When I had my wheels off earlier this week I put all the bolts in the vice (with protective packing;)) and gave them all a good wire brushing.
When the warmer weather arrives they'll get a lick of silver smooth Hammerite paint on the heads.

And it will just all come off when you put the wheels back on , unless you paint them in situ. I have done this to mine (twice) I am looking for 17mm plastic covers for them, I just can't seem to find the right shade of silver/grey. I refuse to buy new bolts from MB as they will just go the same way.

I had a similar situation exactly two years ago - locking key sheared, bit was stuck in the nut, seemingly welded in.

Removed it with neodymium magnet and bought a new key from MB - £35 total cost ... not ideal, but not too bad either - at least I ended up with a brand new key.

I still used them after that, but not planning to anymore, when the summer alloys go back on (winters got a new set of wheel bolts anyway).
