Berks mainly, UK. Devon too a lot of the time.
Car
1986 420SE, 1990 420SEC, 1989 2CV6.
I have these Lorinser LO wheels i just bought, which havent fitted straight on as i hoped. I'm getting BIG vibration, as the tyre place says they havent got spigot rings fitted, so they dont sit flush onto the centre of the hub.
I had them balanced, but they almost seem worse, even though i went to a good place. That guy said they balanced ok to zero, so shouldnt be too vibratey. The other place says they should be ok with spigot rings on, and that they arent too buckled or anything. (Back one slightly.)

They are getting some rings machined for me, in a few days they'll be ready. Will these be enough to cure this vibration? I hope they'll be accurate enough. Or am i likely to need to get something else, spacers or whatever.

I'm slightly gutted, been looking for wheels like this for a while and they look the business!

Et 23 front, et 11 rear, 16". Hope someone can give me advice, i'm a bit lost on wheels i have to admit, and didnt realise it could be so complicated.

Spigot rings can be bought on Ebay very cheap around £5 for a set of four
If the wheels are all balanced correctly then the spigot rings should stop any vibration. They "centre" the wheel onto the hub so that it is a tight fit.
What are they charging you to get the spigot rings "machined" They are an off the shelf product. Also the original Mercedes alloys should be the same centre bore 66.6 so should not need spigot rings?

The charge isnt much he said, a few quid, but nothing too bad. The hole in the centre of the Lorinser wheels is definitely bigger than the one on the original wheels. What a shame. Somehow i wonder if these spigot rings will be accurate enough to sort out the vibratiion. Dont things like that have to be quite precise?

i would hazard a guess they were machined out to fit another car, make sure you put up some pics

Perhaps you are right Khimani. Thanks for the replys too T7RY B. I'm kind of stressed now, lol. I been so excited about these new wheels and now its vibration crazy, had it so beautifully smooth before too. Slightly worried its going to be hard to get rid of all the wobbles. Boo :(

Anyway heres some pics. I love the look, exactly what i wanted.

Hello

I recently fitted some 20" alloys to my ML and upon fitting them noticed I had a vibration around 55mph

Took the car to costco and they balanced the wheels, on putting them back on they mentioned these spigot rings? I've never heared of them and have had different alloys on almost all cars.

Driving away after the balancing they were fine, but got hold of the spigot rings, thin plastic type washers from the hub size to the wheel. Like you I thought what difference can they do?

As it happends I will never know as it drove fine after the balancing and had these fitted after only 4miles or so of extra driving.

I guess they MUST make a difference and I feel better having them on anyway. Let us know how you get on.

at the front i cheaped out and got some universal 10mm spacers, even though the front hubs on the 126 are long they taper, so with the spacers there is nothing to support the wheel, i fixed the spacers to the back of the wheels so they could be balanced together but i still get some vibration at certain speeds.

On the back i have 22mm spacers, the type which bolt on the hub and the wheels in turn bolt to the spacers.

You really should only use "Hub centric" spacers
Universal ones do not fit accurately so you may still get vibration.

nice car man, i usually don't like the chrome but it's been done right on yours.

Thanks. I know what you mean, but somehow with this colour i like the chrome. No more chrome now though! Lol.

Hmm if these rings dont work with curing vibration, perhaps i should try some hubcentric spacers. I really dont want any vibrations at all, having just got to the point where the car was silky smooth at all speeds, i dont want to go back to jiggling. THese cars arent supposed to jiggle. Its nasty to drive at the moment, cant go above 65 :(

Well the rings have almost removed all vibrations. There's a tiny bit still, I'll live with it until refurb time. The rings were a wee bit on the small side, but also it turns out the wheel bolts have the wrong conical seat. They need a different shaped cone, which might help. They aren't cupshaped like the standard ones were. I didn't realize there wre different shaped cones too?! The world of wheels is definitely more complex than I thought.. Thanks for advise and replies.

Well only just vibration free now, after some different sets of spigot rings, and several different shops' attempts at wheel balancing. The solution was new front tyres, one must have been out of round. So for reference, this is another potential cause of vibrations.

Hi Ian - always try getting the wheels balanced without tyres. That way you can eleminate a bent wheel or dodgy spigot ring.

Went to Roger's in Wrexham today to see my Brabus wheels. They look incredible - better than new ! Two coats of wheel wax and some measurements taken to ensure the spacers are correct and hopefully they'll be fitted this week.

Cheers

Jonny

Thanks for the advice about thewheelrestorer.com. A real quality smaller establishment. Such attention to detail, and happy to do whatever options you have in mind, unlike anywhere else i asked. (I actually wanted tthe rim diamond cut but left unlacquered so i could maintain the finish myself.)
And thanks to them my last leftover vibrations have gone. I wouldnt hesitate to recommend them to anyone who cares about their car.

The finish is fantastic. They couldnt get them quite straight enough to go on the lather for diamond cutting, so i opted to go for their uber shiny bright silver, which looks like diamond cut anyway. Very pleased :)

wheels.. yours, what are they?

trying to find a set of these myself. and im really curious what exactly they are?

Lorinsr LO's. Set on ebay recently but they ended early so i guess got snapped up. Not that common. German ebay seems a better bet, seen a few sets on there.
