Hi all, i have an e300 1998. when im using my lights now at night my onboard computer flashes up several warnings eg: ABS warning, light defective, skid control not working etc, as well as this my power steering gets very heavy and the horn or indicators or anything that uses power either works very badly or doesnt work at all? i recently fixed my heater as the metal pipe behind the engine had rotted through, also my fan belt is squealing a lot. can anyone shed light on the lack of electric or whats causing it...?
i dont know if fixing the heater has anything to do with this, maybe just coincidence. im sure the only reason the warning lights come on is due to this lack of electricity as it never happens during the daytime.

please help. thanks

I'm new to the merc scene so far from being as experienced as most here but it sounds like an alternator problem. Is the belt tight enough? The squealing belt is because it's slipping. Worse still, the alternator bearings could be seizing. Slip the belt off and check that it's smooth running and the bearings are quiet. Beyond that I have to hand over to the experts........

For a starting point, you need to find out why your belt is squeeling, probably the tentioner's lost its pull.

Why's that Renault, doesnt that engine have the tentioner ?

Your car has parameter steering. This is an additional assistance provided at low speed. It is electrically operated. If it and your abs, bas, esp etc. are all effected then this is an electric problem as mentioned above. A squealing fan belt may mean inadequate charging of your battery which is obviated when the load is increased by turning on the lights.

someone had mentioned to me that there was an electric pulley on these cars and if thats faulty it would cause this to, has anyone heard of this, or is it pie in the sky stuff?
