Hi can anybody shed some light on this...
every three to four weeks my water light is coming on and I'm having to top it up, can't find any sign of a leaky radiator, any one else had this trouble, I'm driving a j reg 190e 2.0l... just hoping its not something too expensive, got to get a new back box this week!!! oh the joys lol.

Loosing that small amount of water over a long period, the leak will not be easilly spotted. It could be water pump leaking. Have you checked for water in the oil to see if the head gasket has gone or around all the hoses, there will be a telltale sign, but it will need some serious looking.

I had the same thing with my E320. Turned out to be a hose into the NSR of the block. COnnection was tightened, and problem went away.

I didn't fix it myself, BTW, it was done when the car was in for a service, so I can't give you any more detail.

PJ

PS: I had already checked the head gasket.

Remove the oil filler cap and see if there is sign of white gunge, if there is the head gasket is suspect. If not check all hoses and connections and look for leakage from the engine block. Good luck, let us know how you get on.

I had a similar problem, was a rusty heater matrix pipe at the back of the engine. Difficult to get to, so I had it sleeved instead.

thanks everyone, no gunge in the oil so I'll start checking the pipes @ the weekend when I can see in the engine... I'll let you know how it goes!

That's great news!! Usually expensive to put right - been there, done that:(

Do keep a close eye on your temp guage though just in case the small leak suddenly become a bigger one just when you don't suspect it;)

Has the rubber on the pressure cap perished ?
