The silver one.
2001 E430 96k this morning coming around a roundabout fairly fast and the gearbox dropped out of gear, tried putting it in neutral then back into drive whilst moving no joy, pulled over and stopped, into neutral and there was a click from the selector area and then put it into drive and away it went again.

Trouble on the way or a special merc feature?.

Im used to little quirks as i have always had landrovers, but this is a bit more than a little quirk.

It a problem brewing.
Firstly check the ATF level, after that have the codes read.

The selector click is just the reverse interlock solenoid operating at 5mph.

Thanks Dieselman:) i am off to merc tomorrow to buy the dipstick, so will see if any coolant is on atf, but does not lose coolant.

Hi

It is the level of the ATF that you need to check first dont worry about coolant in ATF just yet. Try your level first. The dipstick is a very crude affair similar to the springy gear that holds net curtains. You could make one based on the measurements on here somewhere.
Hopefully it will be low ATF level with a simple leak to cure and then top up.
