Hi everyone,

Haven't been on here for a while, but I've just agreed the sale of my merc to a guy in France. Trouble is, I've also just lost my only key fob!
What do I do now? Does anyone know if the dealer will be able to get me a new key without having the old one to go by, or am i totally royally screwed? I've establised the price will be about £150 by having a search, but couldn't see what info they need.
Also, any idea how long it'd take? Oh, and it's a W202!

Cheers, James

You need proof of ownership and ID.. lots of it.

Armed with this you can order a replacement key for your car from the Vin #. It may take a week to ten days for the key to arrive though.

Dealer needs car to be at stealership when ordering and once again when collecting new key  in addition to all of above!

Woo Hoo!!

Doh!! Why do they need this? If it's just for the sake of showing i own the car then hopefully i may be able to persuade them to let me off that one?

Thanks for the prompt responses guys :thumb:

If your car is fitted with a factory security system, the key will need to be programmed, although it should be an easy diy job. For obvious reasons, your car won't be with you when you order the key, so the logbook should suffice, along with with supported personal id, utility bills etc.

Inside leg measurement, dental records, a letter from both parents etc, etc, etc:crazy:

Depends on the dealer - there was a report recently of one asking for this .

MB Glasgow & MB Edinburgh do not ask for this - I have had keys in past couple of months without problems , photocard driving licence + V5 is sufficient .

If your buyer insists on two keys with the car (which is normal and something I would always insist) you are in for an expensive time.
Somewhere around £400 for two keys...............

Luckily the buyer only wants one key! Went to the stealership today armed with my licence and logbook and I've got one on order! Good old guernsey, luckily i know 3 of the guys there personally! Programming is basically a case of locking and unlocking a few times apparently.
All sorted for £156 in the end.

Cheers for the help guys,

James

No!

I am sure you can only have so many keys regestered to a car, and once you reach that amount they won't issue any more, so any lost keys should be taken off the list regestered to said car.

Icould be wrong though :dk:

just a thought if you are selling your car to someone in france you may need to be careful check out the auto trader website as i remember some scam from people buying cars from abroad something to do with shipping i think :dk:
