Low owner 190E cosworth

Will, I will keep an eye on the ASD & take up your offer of explaining if any intermintent occurs.

Gearshift is not too bad as it happens, but I have no other experience of the Getrag, so have nothing to compare against.

Things to do so far with, in no particular order

1) service
2) buy some orange indicators
3) source a second hand parcel shelf
4) paint the headlamp wipers matt black
5) replace leather gearnob, its showing its age badly!
6) possibly source a smaller Sportline steering ( could be easier said than done!)

Sounds like a reasonable plan of action Dee.

Will you be servicing the car yourself or taking it to a specialist/indi?

Only reason I ask is that it pays to take it to somewhere who is familiar with these cars - most garages will simply shrug their shoulders at you if you ask them to inspect/adjust the valve clearances, or to assist with an ASD or SLS fault.

Orange indicators obviously a doddle to source and fit
Ditto the parcel shelf
Ditto the wipers (if needed?)
The gearknob is about £140
Sportline wheel - might be a little tricky (to source!) but possible nonetheless. Decent allen-hex socket and long breaker bar/assistant maybe needed if the wheel hasn't been removed for 20 years!

Best of luck,

Will

Cosworth's came with 390 mm steering wheels which are the same size as fitted to Sportline optioned cars.

I will deffo be needing a good indi, any recommendations in the West London area would be much appreciated.

Thought about going to M-b but seeing as the last couple of services stamps are from specialists, no point really now.

Shame as so much of its servicing has been at M-B, but I dont suppose any of their techs are familier with 190E's anymore either.

Ian Wright of Star Motors knows his 16 valves inside out. He's had an almandine 2.5-16 for years. It may be a bit further west than you'd anticipated but it's really only a half hour blast down the M4 when traffic is moving.

I don't know what the labour rates are for London indys but I'm pretty sure they're higher than out of town places.

Hi Dee,

I have/had the same dilemma. My 2.5-16 has a full MB service history and is just under 100k miles. The last major 'service' carried out by the previous owner cost just shy of £4k. The trouble is though that I doubt today if many MB dealers would be all that familiar with the older models, what you need is a knowlegable specialist who has experience and patience with these cars.

In the West London area, with a 2.5-16, it has to be worth a visit to TM Motors in West Molesey (020 8941 4044). Tony is very familiar with these cars and has real passion for them. His wife drives a 2.5-16 everyday and I know of several 2.5-16 owners who have used his services extensively (there's a nice article in a Mercedes Enthusiast magazine on a thorough 2.5-16 overhaul)

Hi Will

I think the decision has been made slightly easier for me in that the last 2 services have been at specialists, so naturally that is where the cars servicing future should lie from now on & like you say an old school mechanic would be more suited to this type of car...

Where did you decide to go in the end?
