I know this has been discussed before, but I want to lubricate all the roof seals on my SL. Whilst there are not really any creaks now, I just want to ensure none happen in the future and the rubbers stay supple and do thier job. I have some halfords silicone lubricant in an aerosol and some WD-40 silicone lubricant too in an aerosol. Which is best? Some people say use Vaseline, but I'm worried that becaouse it is petroleum based it will rot the rubber. Any thoughts on this guys?

Silicone is the right one I believe.

Yup, go for silicone, apply quite regularly and all should be well. It's what I use to clean and protect my rubber, so to speak

It works on the SL and worked on previous 3 series convertible with the folding hardtop too....

I have some speciic MB silicone in a little MB bottle for this job.

Call me tomorrow and I will give you the Pt number.

Thanks Olly. I think I've seen this on another forum. I believe there is a picture of the bottle with the part number too. I'm hoping to get my new car serviced by you in January, but according to the Tier 1 Warranty, I have to have it serviced by an MB dealer???, which I find strange as I know an independant can serice a new car and the warranty still be honoured. It's a real shame as I'd much rather you service it:thumb:

Are you sure? I did not think they can do that?

Yup-It's actually written in the warranty policy booklet

I'd much rather have my SL serviced by Olly but have concerns over the Mobilo cover not the warranty. The tier 1 warranty booklet states: It is a condition of this warranty that your vehicle is regularly serviced in accordance with the manufacturers recommendations. Failure to comply with this requirement will result in automatic termination of cover.

That doesn't say it has to be serviced by a MB main dealer.

I thought EU legislation put an end to that.
It has for the warranty supplied with a new car, but for a used car the warranty can include whatever T's & C's the warranty supplier sees fit. This is because you have the choice whether to purchase the warranty or not and thus choose whether or not to be bound by its terms (unfair contract terms notwithstanding).

Hi Guys, Wurth make a product that i have used on my car and have found it to be a really good item for Rubber care and for door seals etc. I use it on my W124 which is a 1994 model and it really made a difference to the rubber. I have not just used it on the rubber seals but water pipes as well. It is called Rubber Care and is not badly priced. go to www.wurth.co.uk , and look at the Auto Care Range and you will find the Rubber Care in spray or stick form. The great thing is it is silicone free.

I think you are quite right here.

My warranty booklet is worded a bit differently I'm afraid. Will have another look at it and quote it here later. I too would much, much rather PCS/Olly looks after my car, but hey ho

I think actually it is for any manufacturer supplied warranty provided free of charge, not only for new vehicles. Therefore the tier 1 and 2 warranties provided by MB with an approved used vehicle also cannot contain such stipulations.

Perhaps the difference in the policy wording between mine and the OP's tier 1 warranty policy is the date of issue? Although if the car is still under the warranty then it must be less than a year since purchased I guess.

Regards,

Dave, mine says exactly that on page 4 of the booklet as well. However, on page 12 (section 6) titled 'Service Standards' it says 'Failure to comply with the service schedule recommended by Mercedes Benz will invalidate this warranty. All service work must be carried out by an authorised Mercedes Benz retailer using only Mercedes Benz approved parts'

An interesting distinction and I'm not sure of the answer, but I was under the impression that it only applied to new vehicles. Need to make further enquiries...

Let us know the outcome Phil

Well, I've done a little more digging with my limited knowledge and resources and I think in fact Phil is right, and I'm wrong. It appears that the removal of such stipulations was only forced on the manufacturers for new cars and the original warranties.

I'm glad you guys made me look at it all. So it seems Olly won't get his hands on my car, at least not for the regular service, until next year.

Having said that, according to the warranty info, I've probably already voided mine by fitting a Viseeo MB-2 phone module. If that didn't void it it almost certainly will when I fit a Smarttop roof control module or similar.

Regards,
