Lycra and Manners do not seem compatible

To be honest I think people who going to be a d**k are going to act like one regardless of vehicle type.

^This. But cyclists (I am one myself, daily, in central London), have a higher horse, so to speak, to clamber on.

'Tis a shame as it definitely is a minority. I often say something if somebody cycles through a red for instance. The reason I intervene in such a way is that these people give a bad name to all cyclists. In a discussion about cycle safety, in the pub for instance, the anti-cycling mob almost always fall back on the well you lot don't obey the rules of the road (and therefore by some logic are not valid traffic, or valid people, or something) argument. Most of us do, actually.

A cyclist , whizzing down the nearside , a few weeks back decided to lecture me through the nearside window when we stopped how he was in the right when I was moving slowly and he was going as fast as he could and I had held him up.

Unfortunately when he pointed out he had everything recorded on his camera I invited him to plug it into the handy computer I had in the boot.

He bottled it so I told him "I'm sorry , I cant think what to say" . He set off on his holier than thou rant which I interrupted with "oh hang on, Ive thought.....got it.....Now **** off "

I'm not usually that sharp but on this occasion the lycra clad dik head had really ****** me off.

He did go but despite his shouts and insults that the police would lock me up , they haven't been in touch :fail :D:D

The truck driver behind was laughing his whatevers off.

Another time one decided to have a pop at the traffic lights and blocked our way (I wasn't driving) . The driver told him to move but he informed the driver that if we touched him it would be the last thing we ever did.

At this point I just burst out laughing looking at the 5 foot nowt stick insect with his hong kong phewy pose. He was extremely agitated by this point but seemed to clam somewhat when it was pointed out to him that the car was actually an unmarked traffic car and my mate the driver would love to continue the chat if he would kindly sit in the back :fail :D:D I had to step out of the car.

I must point out though I have many responsible friends who are responsible cyclists , they want to live.

No idea why they cycle when a car or motorbike would get them there quicker :dk:

Are you a policeman?

Was , retired but back out to work for a proper business.

Please bear in mind theres nothing more ex than an ex cop :)

My favourite is when the council has laid on a nice new cycle path for people so that they don't have to contend with traffic round a twisty section of road, but the Lycra brigade feel it is somehow below them to actually use it when the road is so inviting. However if I drove my car up their cycle lane they would likely want me banned or fined. fixed penalties for said cyclists anyone?

Having mellowed slightly with age, I've become more considerate of cyclists, scooter riders, motorcyclists, car drivers and truck drivers. 'Live and let live', I say - I just wish everyone else could be considerate and PLEASE stay the f**k off the road when I want to use it....;)

Exactly, I cycle 10 miles a day to and from work, each day im nearly hit by at least 1 car yet I dont feel the need to create a thread.

Or, apparently, the need to reconsider this suicidal insistence on putting your life on the line every working day!

Every time you leave your house you put your life on the line in one sense of the other.

Not sure if your aware of Cambridge, it has the highest number of cyclists per head in the UK, for the most part the City is cyclist friendly with Cyclelanes on most roads. However this doesnt stop drivers moving across without looking, side swiping and cutting you up.

I cycle 10 miles per day heading to and from work, the alternative would be 3 buses that would take well over an hour and cost me £40 a week. Parking/driving is not an option.

I have cycled virtually every day of my life since the age of around 6 and I have no intention of stopping. Im not lyca clad, I have a GT Mountain bike (which is impractial in the city) and I stick to the rules.

I find it amusing how people on here have so much anti-cycling feelings, yet virtually all of them having been on a bike in years. I suggest they have a go cycling around 1 day and they will see the other side of the coin instead of voicing their opinions without the full story.

Last Tuesday I was in a cycle lane, stopped at a red light while a car went into the back of me. I assume he was texting and rolling forward, however why was he even driving his car in the cycle lane in the first place.

2 Years ago I ended up in A&E (there is a thread on here) when a passenger in a car opened their door on me. Last year I had to have minor surgery as a result of that incident, all because people go through life in their own little world without occasionally looking around once in a while.

karl, unfortunately you are in the minority. I work near the Oval and this area is covered in not just cycle lanes but they have their own traffic lights to allow them to get across a very busy junction in safety. Driving/Parking in this are is not easy or cheap so I get a train and bus or tube to work and walk the rest of the way.

Its a daily occurrence that a cyclist will run a redlight (either a cycle red or main route red) and look at me as if its my fault they nearly hit me.

Quite often they just park up at the lights and cover the complete road so all of the other traffic has to wait and make progress over the junction at the speed of the cyclists.

I am not bothered if they elect to not use a cycle lane, they are not obliged to do so but they are obliged to look out for other road users and look out for themselves.

Compulsory ID plates and insurance will get them behaving better.

I'm a cyclist (but not at the moment - the hernia repair has failed) so I was driving along a route I often cycle, where the road is quite narrow and there is a level crossing. I was stopped at the gates waiting for a couple of trains to cross, when I noticed two MAMIL'S cycle up to the front of the three cars that were waiting on the opposite side and adopt "primary" position - i.e. right in front of the first car. When the gates finally lifted they set off (two abreast) so the following cars would not have chance to overtake for some time! It would have cost them only a matter of seconds to allow the three cars to pass before they themselves set off - but they have now managed to p*** off three more motorists! :fail

end of rant!!!!

As a cyclist and a driver, I'd say it does sound like they were inconsiderate, however it no more makes lycra and manners to be incompatible, than one inconsiderate MB driver makes all MB drivers inconsiderate. Whilst cycling I encounter a lot of pointless aggression, and poor dangerous driving.

I always allow and even encourage cars to pass at the earliest opportunity, either easing off pulling in tighter to the side of the road if possible, or both. Equally I always give drivers a wave of thanks as they pass me safely and considerately.

The aggression of some drivers seems to be just poor standards, stupid people getting terribly 'brave' from the safety of their metal cocoon, and is of course also reflected in some driver to driver interaction.

The roads are a much better and safer place for all with mutual respect and courtesy, and that includes all road users.

All of these points apply to cars yet all of them are broken far more times than bikes.

We have an entire section on here for these incidents, yet there are only a handful of threads against bikes.

Sure there are countless cyclists who break the rules, but we all dont. <-- this is my issue, you cant brand all cyclists the same.

I do not disagree with you, but there is no parity in responsibility. If a car runs a RED, then there is a good chance the driver will get caught by the numerous red Light Cameras in the area, but a cyclist can run them all day long without fear of any comeback.

I know car drivers can be just as bad but I am talking about my own experiences in getting to work.

All comes down to accountability ! Thats what most peoples problems are with bad Cyclists

My favourite is when the council has made a half-ar$ed attempt at creating a nice new cycle path for people so that they can tick the "look how green we are" box but don't bother to maintain it or enforce its restrictions but the Lycra brigade feel it is somehow below them to avoid the gormless, jaywalking pedestrians who also like to use it. Fixed penalties for said jaywalkers anyone ?
