main dealer servicing

^^ Agreed! Nice touch, professional and friendly.

Perhaps if MB UK are reading this they'll realise the way forward to win back people like me!

^I'm sure they do from time to time & hopefuly they'l take away some of the negatives(rust etc) & turn them into positives!:)

If you are in Manchester then you could do worse than MB Skipton, just up the M66/M65.

OK, I know its not on your door step but for 6 year old (+) cars they give you 50% discount on labour, 10% on parts, and they dont stuff you with "extras" that your car does not need, plus you will get an extra two years on you Mobilo-Life thingy. My SLK is going in to them pretty soon and I reckon that the service cost will be less that a years breakdown insurance with the AA or RAC etc so its worth it.

I'm sort of close to the Service Manager, not in the biblical sense mind you!!!!, via my current boss, and if you like I will check to see if he is happy for me to fwd to you his mobile number so you dont have to explain your needs to the usual FOH staffers.

Cheers,
Portzy.

BTW how do you find the fit and finish of the R171?

Now there's a question......

If I am honest, mine is now pretty well sorted in all repsects but from day one I had a few issues with it. Mainly a smidgin' of water ingress into the boot via the overlapping seals, a missaligned rear light cluster, and a COMAND which had a mind of its own, i.e. it kept crashing while watching DVDs. All was sorted in warranty by my local, non-supplying dealer, and I was given a free fourth years extension to that warranty, by the non-supplying dealer, as a good will gesture.

What I have now is a very nice well put together little car that I treasure. All the shut lines are good and equal on all sides, the seats and interior are holding up well, no rattles, no squeaks, 7g gearbox is seamless, all the bits and bobs still work flawlessly, (I did go crazy with the options but I'm glad I did), engine sounds good and goes well for a three litre, all in all its mint.

This is it.

Wouldnt be without it now, might get buried in it or use it to keep chickens when I get too old to drive:D

Portzy.

lovely car, looking at an SLK55 at the weekend. May just crumble on hearing the soundtrack :D

Well my SL500 had a service at M-B Guildford (Tony Purslow) today. Came back absolutely sparkling ... full valet inside and out. And the cost? £125.27!

I supplied my own oil (Mobil 1 from Costco) which obviously helps, but really the price is pretty hard to argue with. They gave it a detailed check over (standard on any car they have in) and didn't come up with anything extra that needed doing.

^Perhaps some of the other mb dealerships should take a leaf out of Tony Purslows book when it comes to servicing/customer support.

Yup. Of course it must make business sense too or they wouldn't do it (they're obviously not a charity!). I guess having a few well-maintained older M-Bs in your car park doesn't hurt the brand image - when I went to pick mine up last night it was parked right at the front of the dealership (in one of the disabled spaces ).

I guess the thing I'm most impressed with is that they never push to do extra jobs. I actually asked them to let me know if they recommended anything else being done (e.g. plugs were last changed in 2007), but they said everything was fine for now.

Hmm 5 years on the plugs, I thought not changing them put stress on ignition system and was a false economy ? Is that right ?

Surely it's the mileage, type of driving and engine efficiency leading to carbon build-up that has the main effect on spark plug performance. The materials in a plug are unlikely to suffer over time (well not for at least tens of years anyway). Manufacturers no doubt recommend/stipulate plug changes at shorter intervals to save on cleaning them as we old folk all used to do and to make a bit more profit at each service.

It's done under 5000 miles on the plugs that are in there now :o

main reason for changing plugs is to make sure they do not seize over time, i think maybe every 3 years a loosen and re-torque would make sure this didnt happen.

As with BTB 500 im still using the dealer network for servicing, odd jobs i do myself and anything major it`ll go to an indi (unless its a mobilio recovery job)
