Maintaining your car on the cheap.

Wouldn't dream of using second hand personally, my Wife & Kids are worth more than saving a few quid on a tyre!

You don't have to sell your Wife an Kids to buy a tyre...

Nothing like being a bit over-dramatic, is there?

It made me smile when my track instructor, a grade A ARDS, turned up in his old hack with ditch finder tyres on. I forgot to ask him also when he last had is car on the 4-wheel laser geometry rig? :)

I like quality as much as the next man, but there proportion to be had.

Today I ordered 5L of fully synthetic oil + filter for £16, from ECP who are giving free filters away when you buy Triple QX oil plus the usual 25% discount. Bargain motoring in my book :thumb:

I have 4 ditchfinders, so I drive accordingly...because contrary to popular opinion it is the driver who finds the ditch because he can't compensate.

I get my oil and filter at KF...because they can do it cheaper than I can but the parts.

My alternator is second hand.

My money goes on my Porsche...the Queen. But even then...I wont sell the wife.

For what it's worth....

Having seen Euro Car Parts delivering on more than one occassion to a Merc specialist garage, guess where I'm now getting my stuff? That and the local motorfactor for good quality oils and the like.

On the tyre front, I usually buy new ones just coz it's hard to find large size s/hand and I pay mid to upper range (at least Euro/Japanese branded and Conti's etc if similar price which they usually are) for the AMG but shop around - had cheap tyres on other performance cars before but things like wall stiffness and feel just ain't the same. In fact, I DID get rid of new cheap on an Alfa I bought and fitted Pirelli P6's to my absolute joy. I do get s/hand components when the price difference is mad and if it fries again early so be it, but so far so good.

I don't know if it's the same as m/cycle world but high performance and grippy tyres definitely lose some of thier sticky stuff as they get older and wet performance is the first to go, as I discovered after slithering down the road on tyres a few years old. Just makes you think...

a lot/most of the part worns come from company cars which have bald fronts but they replace all 4.

since they now have the 25% or 30% discount i have been using ECP for pretty much everything recently. I had to do the spheres on the silver 124 so they came from ECP, as did the engine mounts. all seems fine. GSF on ebay also offers good prices.
