manual gear mode

I was on my way home today and thought i'd go manual gear change, got on to a 30mph road and tried to shift into 5th but wouldn't go, just stayed in 4th. is it a speed related thing ? like going faster it will go into 5th ? had a look in my hand book and searched the forum but not found anything. 722.6 by the way.

There will be a minimum speed for each gear

IIRC the cluster shows D once 5th gear has been selected in manual setting?
As above, you may not have been going fast enough for the transmission to select 5th gear.

yeah thats what i was thinking, will try it tomorrow at a faster speed.

The 5 speed?

My C320 had that transmission and from memory would not go into 5th until the car was travelling over 35 mph.

In warmer weather at around 31 on a level surface I could attain 5th gear and let speed drop to 30mph

When I tried manual mode in the past it would go 1 to 4, but never into 5th. It would just say "D"

Unless it's an AMG 'manual' mode is really only range select, one cannot select gears as in a manual box but limit the the range in which the auto box operates. Select 4th and the box will auto shift from 1 to 4, select 2 only from 1 to 2 etc..

It only shows 1 to 4 in "manual" mode then D means full Auto, ie 1 to 5

just been to pick the Mrs up from work and on the way i got up to 40mph and it clicked straight into 5th gear, but come of the throttle and as it slowed a tad it put its self back into 4th. now i know for sure.
