Can anybody tell me what the max towing weight for a braked trailer on a E300 TD estate (1999) please, I can't find my handbook.

If you're thinking of pulling a caravan you need to know the kerbweight too, and the max. permitted noseweight.

A Caravan !!!! HOW VERY DARE YOU !!

No it's a boat I need to move from Wales to Sth Devon.

LOL I take it all back then :D

There are various databases online, but they're not free. I'm sure someone here will know though.

I have the saloon car figures to hand, the estate shouldn't be much if at all different.

Max unbraked trailor weight 750kg
Max braked trailor weight 1900kg
saloon drawbar weight 75kg,
estate drawbar weight 86kg.

Depends on the make of tow bar.

Mercedes E class Estate 1999
I've found these. for the Bosal bars.
2110kg max towing weight with a 85kg max nose weight

The tow bar can't govern the allowable specified weight the car can tow.

I think your figures are for the 320Cdi.

Yup it's determined by being able to re-start on a specified gradient with that trailer weight - defined by the car manufacturer.

Thanks for the response, looks like I can tow 1500kg braked ok then.

The max D value for the Bosal bar is 11,02 kn
max Vertical loas S= max static weight on the towball authorised by the vehicle manufactuere.

D vale = (TLW x MTW) / TLW + MTW) x 9,81 in N

TLW = Total loaded weight (vehicle)
MTL = Total rolling weight (vehicle + trailer)
MTW = Max Towing weight (MTW = TRW-TLW)

The 2110kg max towing weight and the nax nose weight quoted before are to cover all the model platform variants for the E class Estate 1999.

Do you have the ones for the saloon as a comparison?

I am sure my old 300TD Estate could tow 1500kg. I regularly towed MY CARAVAN :D :D 1400kg with no problems

Now that is interesting and I'm not surprised the saloon figures are greater because the car weighs a bit less than the estate.

Here's the interesting bit, my figures came straight from the Mercedes Technical manual for the W210.

I wonder who is correct, Mercedes or Bosal..

The type approval documents for both are avaiable at Bosal online catalogue, tested by the TUV.

The figures for the current W211 are 1900 kg, for the S211 2100 kg with an auto gear box, 1900 kg for a manual S211.

I cannot see how Bosal would get approval for any higher figure than that approved by the car manufacturer. On the other hand, the EU rules changed sometime after 1999 (my MY2000 car had a tow hitch that did not have to pass the current requirements while at 2003 the new rules already applied).

The current figures mention 12% road gradient.

I believe manufacturers can choose what gradient they use - it's not an industry standard. I remember Ford and Vauxhall using different ones.

don'y forget the 85% rule for safer towing ... if the braked tailer, caravan ,or boat is greater than 85% of the weight of your car then greater care is needed in towing ....you can go up to 100% but you would if not used to towing have a very scary ride .....
