Seen a few threads like this and I accept there may be cases where you need an amplifier here is how to set up an ipod for in car use to maximise the volume available

Go to the main menu on the ipod

Scroll down to settings

Select "Volume limit" and wind the slider all the way to the right and press the centre button

Then press the menu botton and scroll down to "sound check" make sure that is set to off

Now you can use the ipod as normal

You can hear on this video my ipod is operating at a similar volume to the radio and CD player so wont frighten you when the traffic cuts in

I assume this will only work if you are taking the feed from the ipod headphone socket?

Any OEM integration, IPOD dock, or even the monster cable will use an AUX out so this probably wouldn't work.

I know on the BMW system it has a IPOD level in idrive so that you can set the correct level. You can also adjust the traffic volume level.

OEM intergration shouldnt have the problem of low volume , many cars use an aux in via the 3.5mm headphone jack not just MB so making sure the ipod is set correctly is important for those as well and often overlooked

The aux in cable from MB is a cheap solution (£35) and as you know connects easily to the comand unit and offers a acceptable method of listening to your ipod in the car, far better than the radio trasmitters

Even with an AIX input in the car I've always used a charging cable with an AUX out on the cable like this one.

COMON PROBLEM . when recording/transfering the songs onto ipod the computer voulume and ipod volume must be set to max if you do it with say half volume when you get to play in it your car your car will only play the song at half volume

There is also a program called MP3 Gain, which can boost the volume after recording to your computer. It also adjusts the volume of all tracks in relation to each other to avoid some loud, some quiet tracks when listening.

UK (and I think European) Ipods have a built in level max, which is lower than say, one bought in the US.

I run this little program whilst my ipod is attached to the computer, and it lets me reset the volume to the IPDOs max.

Cheers

Hi maddog, did what you advised and when i flick over to CD / radio, the volume is much higher and if a TA comes through it is deafening. Just to double check though. When you state 'Press the centre button' i'm presuming this is the button on the volume slider, not the button which selects 'volume limit'?

In "volume limit" you slide the volume all the way to the right and then press the centre button to "fix" this as the maximum volume, after you press the centre button the ipod returns to the settings menu.

These instructions will help anyone get the best volume out of their ipod , it wont however solve everyone's problems as some people may still need an amp or settings changed on the head unit

Think of it as a first step and a free one at that

goPod - works a treat

Tried goPod from post 9 above and it sets the maximum ipod volume higher than previously possible, great for through the aux but painful with the earphones! It will live connected in the car now.
