Hello,

I wanted to share my recent experience with my CL55 AMG Kompressor, y. 2005.

The problem it had was the following:

- When driving it, I would hear some clicking sound from the gear selector when in Drive, coming from it from that D position. Click-click-click/tick-tick-tick
- It would put the car into limp mode and not shift at all, it seems always getting stuck on gear 3 or gear 2. No down shift or upshift.
- The red Check Engine indicator would appear on the dash and it would put the car into a limp mode
- when moving the gear selector to R or to P would not recognize the change
- when trying to put in R it would feel a hard/knocking shift as if you are trying to force it to R.
- when gear selector moved to a P or R or D or N, it didn't show the change in the dash, at the small digital screen that shows P, D, or R, depending where the selector sits.
- you would need to restart the car and then it would go to normal until you don't when it will make the same problem again
- On diagnose STAR, would show P1856 Gear lever position detection has failed. Later it would show even P1911 and P240C

First attempt to fix it:
- i sent it to an MB mechanic who said he knows what is the issue and can fix it.
- the issue it seems was famous, the sensor of the gear lever position doesn't work. And it is located inside the black cartridge in the gear selector box.
- you can't just swap the gear selector assembly with another one as inside the cartridge there is an ignition code married to the car.
- he tried to clean the cartridge inside but it wasn't fixed permanently. Once in a while the problem would reoccur.

Second attempt to fix it, successful:
- I had the gear selector assembly removed and sent to an electronic shop. They said its a common problem, easy to fix.
- But when they opened it they said not possible as the cartridge/and the assembly have been 'touched' too many times.
- So, what we did was, I found another gear selector from a donor car, used one. I sent it to the shop. They transferred the ignition code from my assembly to the new/donor assembly.
- Problem was solved. The car shifts well and it shows on the dash screen at what gear it sits.
- Worth to mention: the gear selector in my car as per MB EPC has these 2 x part nrs: A2202672824 and A2202673324. When we took out the gear selector, the physical one had this nr: A2202673224, which means it was put there from another car.

Just for info, here are all the inter-changable gear selector part nrs that fit my car and are equivalents to: A2202672824 and A2202673324:

A2202671724
A2202672324
A2202672724
A2202672524
A2202672824
A2202673324

A2202670124
A2202670624
A2202670924
A2202671124
A2202672524
A2202672824
A2202673324

All these can be used for such an action. I am not sure how would I have fixed the car if the electronic service shop wouldn't be able to transfer the ignition code to the donor gear selector assembly. I am sure there is an option for a new one with a new coding but that I suppose would be very expensive.

cost for this:
130 Eur for the used donor gear selector
90 Eur for the electronic shop service
I will not name the shipping costs for getting the selectors back and forth.

Best regards,
