Mcse

There is no such thing as different varieties of MCSE.

Out of 7 core exams that make up MCSE status, only one can be chosen from a selection of electives.

You can do a varieties of MCP's sure, but an MCSE is an MCSE save for the slight difference in the chosen elective exam.

a .net MCSE.... now I've heard everything. LOL

For someone claiming to have so much experience, you should know this.

Well, I'm finding this quite funny.

Would Dragon be so kind as to allow us to see his/her MCP qualifcations, via the Microsoft Larning web site, as he/she is so qualified on this subject ?

Errr....which part of my post is impossible ?

I've noted quite a few instances where people post complete and utter rubbish and even get thanks for doing so - I have however just about learnt not to bother responding. Sit back and let it be.

Ha Ha !! :D

Don't know if anyone else has done it yet , but welcome back Fred .... ;)

I've got 'O' level woodwork, does that count?

Are you saying that you are a member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers' ?
Or that you worked somewhere that has paid membership?

Hello Howard, no they haven't, I sloped in under the radar and am not allowed to be naughty.

Very funny. For those interested it means Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer. There are varieties: Network, .Net, C#.net, VB.net, security.

I know what it's meant to stand for, however I've met so many "paper only" MCSEs that can't apply it to real life that you'll find many people in the IT trade no longer value the MCSE unless it's backed with plenty of real experience.

Computering engineering?
Network MCSE ? No such thing as a Network MCSE
Sun Certified Java Engineer (associate, programmer, developer or architect, no such thing as Java Engineer)

If you at least get the name of the qualifications correct it might sound more believable.

My company recently lost a contract at renewal with a shortsighted Customer (in the financial sector) who was able to get MCSE consultants at £395 a day! Turns out they were "paper" MCSE's from Eastern Europe plus language difficulties are rife  We await the Customers return..... (and funnily enough our rates may be a bit more expensive now  )

P.S. I do not mean in any way to infer that there are no extremely professional MCSE's from Eastern Europe

timskemp/gollom - This happens all the time......I've got 12-13 years....although the last 5 I've been running my own company, so slightly less techy time....I only hire "paper" MCSE's who have proven experience, as well as at least one "real" qualification.

My MCSE is way way old (NT4)

I've 10 years experience at the sharp end and currently looking to move on from where I am and surprisingly, everywhere is wanting current MCSE's (Looks like I'll have to do one again)

Even worse is that all the jobs I've been to test you using damn MCSE style test questions which frankly I generally dont need to keep in my head in the real world as I can just look it up. (Even if I had it in my head I'd look it up anyway to be sure).

Basically, if I've spent the last 2 months doing trancenders and brain dumps, finding employment is easy. 10 years of real world 3rd line stuff doesnt seem to cut the mustard.

Plumbing is the easier job to rip off the public and you get a higher rate than these crap MS stuff. At least people from Indian subcontinent don't have plumbing qualification to compete with.:D

Hi Sp!ke,
I simpathise with you (even if I can't spell it!) I found myself in a similar situation a few years ago and decided the writing was on the wall for 2nd/3rd line techies. I went into Problem Management and was able to get ITIL qualified through my old company. It makes excellent use of my techical ability (ignore anyone who says PM's don't need to be technical) and it means I still get to learn stuff from other techies. It also means that I can excersie my problem solving skills and apart from the reporting writing it is quite interesting and varied. Oh, and you get to actually sort things out permanently, which as a techie I'm sure you find makes a change.

PS Oh, WLEG, congrats on the qualification, didn't mean to detract from it in any way.

I've just come back from a 14 day MCSE bootcamp in Oxfordshire, Firebrand Training.

I need to re-sit the CompTIA Security+ which is annoying at £217 (got 83% and the pass mark is 85! :( ) but the other M$ exam is a free re-sit and I'm all done.

Considering I went there with little experience I'm happy to have accomplished what I did :)
