Happy to chat to the OP but in short:
The A6 is a brilliant car if you have not driven a 5 series, honestly it's a nice car. And that the problem the word nice, it sums up the cars beautiful looks but that are only skin deep. It's spec dependant, we had the Ultra S-line with some extra kit but it was awful: the Seats, nav, drive train, handling, lack of basic gadgets and tech, all lacking. Had a 3.0 Quattro for a while and an BITDI which I had actually went and ordered!! I was supposed to get a Black edition BITDI 4 weeks ago but I cancelled after I popped in and did a final sanity check in an F11 535d. It on another level maybe because the 5 and 7 series sit on the same platform?? So hence the impulse buy of a 4 year old one for the wife, now looking out for a year old loaded one for me!!
The Merc, again I actually ordered a 9 G-Tronic 350 estate with the Premium plus pack when it was announced, the threads is on here somewhere. Anyway, but Merc screwed we about. I drove a few 7 G-Tronics and well I liked the idea of a Merc as a change but the demo never made me want to go for a drive, nice n all but it was just a car. As smooth as a yacht going down wind on the spinnaker and handled like one two. It also made me feel like I was driving my mums car, an E63 would be different but that column shift reminded me of her custom GMC Astro day Van she had 15 years ago!!
I guess BMWs have a bad image of smug ar53holness but that's in part because once you have gone through the mill if other cars and you get one (a good one as you do get Friday cars, my old E61 535d cost BMW a fortune under warranty) you righteously feel smug.
So I'm not just saying it, been there and got the miles under my belt in all cars and different specs. But as I have said before love the new eclass looks so if Merc makes a sports estate, diesel or hydrid with AWD that handles I'm interested!! But I hoping I can afford a Tesla X by then!!
