Looking to buy a used e-class coupe from mercedes.

They have offers on if you take there finance offer at 9% you get £1500 off the price.
I have the money for a cash buy, but just wanted to know if you could take the finance and then pay off the total price a few months later e.g. taking advantage of the £1500 off?

Yes you can. You'll be paying probably a few hundred in fees and initial interest payments for the finance so your overall saving will be more like £1000 than £1500.

This has been suggested to us a few times on different cars over the years - nearly bought a Yaris for daughter 2 and there was £2000 from Toyota if we took finance but in the end bought something else.

I find these things irritating as it's illegal to offer different prices for cash and credit. They get around it by saying it's a deposit contribution not a discount on the car.

Yes, but don't let on to the salesman as he will not let you do it as the finance company will claw back they commission paid to the salesman/dealer.

There will be a flat fee in there somewhere, but not £1500 worth.are you sure you cannot get the £1500 discount regardless?

I thought that, but in the Toyota case I mentioned above, the salesman encouraged us to do it.

Maybe they (either the salesman or the finance company) just hope that people will intend to pay it off, but then never do.

I concur.

The times we've seen this method proposed it's been the sales staff who've suggested it.

Parent bougt a new car last year, there was a £2k deposit contribution if taking out finance. They didnt take finance but still got the £2k off so as Simon said check they wont give you the £1.5k off even if you dont take finance.

I asked a few dealers for the price off and they just said, there is no chance of any discount/price reduction as our cars are priced accordingly and researched to the market price..

Mmm, MB Dartford said pretty much that to me about the C63 ( "we can sell all our cars at list" ) - so I went to Birmingham and got a substantial discount, cost £7 on the train.

There are always alternatives........

Yep same thing MB Dartford said to me on saturday.

Do you just ask for a discount straight away?

I found the following approach works best. Pick the car, spec and price you want to pay or finance ring as many dealers as possible with your requirements and tell them who you have pushed this out to give them your number and let them get back to you. You need to have reasonable expectations and as Simon points out be happy to travel to pick up.

It's worked on my last 4 cars and I have always got what I wanted.

I thought the OP already had a chauffeured 2012 Rolls Royce...
