Mercedes-Benz to upgrade maps on COMAND system for free

June 2nd, 2010
Mercedes-Benz vehicle drivers are to benefit from the added perk of seeing their COMAND APS multimedia systems updated at no extra cost for the next three years.

Motorists in 39 countries, including Great Britain, are to receive the latest map updates free of charge, which will provide them with a navigation system taking in a number of European destinations.

Not alot of info but I would guess this will be for all hard drive based systems only. Also I guess they would only do it on cars with Comand fitted from the factory or a retrofit fitted by a main dealer.

It is for HDD comand systems only.

Our customers need not worry about retrofitted versus factory fitted.

It must be for new cars to be sold in the future, not for all MBs with HDD navigation from today onwards for three years.

Sorry, why do you say that as the new W212 has the new HDD system?

My comment was that this free upgrade must be valid for cars sold from the announcement onwards? I have a hard drive Comand in my almost four year old car and I would not expect a free map update during the next three years (which is what I tried to say previously).

Why should this not apply to cars which are still within 3 years of new ? In fact reading what it says, why should it not apply to all cars with Comand HDD ??

In that case why would it be restricted to HDD units? The DVD itself does not cost much, a few of those within 3 years is nothing compared to the workshop hours if they take care of the update.

Was it on another thread about the same topic where this was clarified, these free upgrades apply only for new W212 cars, at least for the moment. The UK press release had dropped away this piece of info.

It would them cost alot them more if they did this for DVD based systems as they would have to give each customer a set of DVDs. For the HDD based Comand map update they can re-use the same dvds.

Its for all MY2011 onward cars. They all have hard disks by then of course. And the dealer will be doing the updates (so not that many sets of disks to distribute).

There also seems to be a free update for existing W212 owners, but I havent seen that in print so worth a chat with your dealer if you have a W212 (I beleive they all got a new map disk set with last months update disks)

Are you assuming the cost of DVDs as the map update DVDs cost today? That isn't the correct way to calculate the costs. Map DVDs cost comes mostly from the cost of building the content and that cost needs to be paid equally on HDD based updates. The cost of a single DL DVD when pressed in volumes is less than a Euro (they would not need to give the case if they wanted to make it cheap). The HDD Comand update costs a lot of time at the workshop, certainly far more than a Euro. At least I understood that workshops would take care of this update.

Offer is made clearer on this link: Mercedes-Benz Offering Free COMAND APS Map Updates in Europe | eMercedesBenz

From model year 2011, Mercedes-Benz provides the new, free update for the navigation maps for new cars in all model series equipped with COMAND APS. This applies in 39 European countries, and for three years from the date of first registration. The price benefit for this map update amounts to several hundred Euro. Since it is vehicle-specific, this update entitlement is also transferable to the new owner if the vehicle is sold prior to the end of the three-year period.

I've basically assumed that they won't be doing "free 3 year" for any existing cars (unless there is lots of complaints about a particular map) because they already sold the cars and less signifcantly already did the "contract" negotiation with the map supplier.

The "free map updates" is another "incentive" when buying a new car, and no doubt a deal has been done with the map supplier for a big payment (possibly up front) for 3 years of "free" maps - I'd imagine done at significantly below what it costs for 3 years of Tom Tom updates (since its for millions of copies of the maps)

The update takes about an hour, and no doubt dealers will be paid a fee for doing the update, i'd imagine below the normal labour rate but it still takes a bay in the service area as the ignition needs to be on (so car needs to be plugged into a charger or running) or you keep having to come back to the car and restart as COMAND turns off after a short while.

The big question is when does model 2011 start? As cars being made now are surely model 2011.

MY2011 will start anytime around now. Its usually about half way through the year. The only one we have seen much earlier was the MY2005 update for the W203 which was late April 2004 build onwards. I think also the R230 SL for 2004 was also rather early in 2005.

Certainly for W204 there have been comments elsewhere that some MY2011 W204's will arrive in the UK before the end of June - this was raised as an issue as the finance offers for the quarter can't be used on MY2011 cars

I would not be surprised if this 3 year deal is extended to existing W212 owners if they request it from their supplying dealer.

When the W212 was launched a year or so ago, the map system was considerably out of date and the POI, particularly in respect of hotels and restaurants was complete rubbish. For example, if you wanted to go to Heathrow Terminal 5 or the correct way (north) up the one-way Tottenham Court Road in London, forget it. The hotel list was sadly deficient and contained approx 25% of the information on some of the previous satnav systems, such as the R230SL for example. The restaurant database was even worse as it contained very few eating houses other than McDonalds, Burger King, Pizza Express etc.

The 2 disc update sent out to dealers several weeks ago substantially updated the map parts and some of the POIs. This took about a couple of hours for dealers to install. However very little was done to improve the restaurant and hotel parts.

A further update which I understand takes about 5 hours to install is currently being issued to dealers and I have been told this substantially updates the hotel and restaurant info. Now if this takes that long I assume it is more than just a patch for the deficient POI parts and perhaps more like a completely new set of firmware and data. In short I suspect its probably the same or a similar system as far as the data is concerned to that supplied with the 2010 R230SL. In other words its darned good.

To take the theory a stage further, perhaps they havent yet managed to perfect the database in the way they would wish which is why they are offering a free 3 year programme of updates. Naturally, MB's announcement only refers to 2011 MY cars as they would not wish to draw attention to the sorry situation that all exisitng W212 owners have had to endure over the past year.

My suggestion to existing W212 saloon, estate, coupe and cabriolet owners is to contact their dealers, arrange for the initial update to be done and negotiate a free 3 year continued update service for the trouble and inconvenience they have been caused.
