Hi

Does anyone know anybody who can supply a new ECU for a 1996 C180? Mercedes have quoted over £1600 for a new one. Also does anyone know what can cause an ECU to fail i.e. should i be looking for an underlying cause before i shell out on a new ECU?

Thanks

You can get the old one repaired, with Motronic the biggest reason for them to fail is when they lose thermal contact with the bulkhead that is used as a heat sink.

I have one here to test, I will open it in the morning and see what goes inside

Cheers for that Malcolm. I've previously sent it to Mercedes who have informed me that it needs to be replaced rather than repaired, but i'm more than willing to listen to advice from those more informed than myself.

Thanks
Alan

The repaired or re con units carry a good guarantee, did the car just stop or was it intermittent going and then stopping

It was the latter, intermittent before completely stopping.

At £1,600 new that is a definite scrapyard item. Can you not find a salvage one?

Do agree £1,600 does sound steep for a 1996 C180, Breakers yard or ebay your best bet, even with ebay though be carefull

If its the Bosch HFM system unit its usually the ignition driver circuit that fails. [engine no 111.921] This prevents the ECU from switching the 2 ignition coils. Initially the fault is intermitant and the car sometimes runs on 2 cylinders only. The fault is usually caused by faulty coil/s, coil supply loom problems or failing HT leads and these need to be addressed at the same time as the ECU repair / replacement or it will fail again . If its the pre 6/96 PMS system [engine no 111.920 ] not sure .

I opened one this morning and I will post photos later, they are about the most primitive of builds that I have ever seen, they are totally non serviceable in any way, the ones by BBa - reman will be the only way to go

Post again later

These things are amazing the way that they are built, there are no output devices in there at all

Very disappointing as I managed to drill out all of the rivets perfectly, the cases are welded and the primitive PCB is an early attempt of an IC and cast in jelly other components are cast in sittu.

I forgot to add the the total component value in the box is about £4.00 if you were making 10k off
