Hi Guys

Last year after spending almost £4k on repairs on my CL55 AMG Kompressor in just over 3 months I decided to get rid as few friends were telling me that they are known to faults and it will continue to give me problems. Is this true? or was I just unlucky?

Car was a 1 owner car with FMBSH and had covered just under 60k miles on a 2003 reg. However I have always loved the look of the CL's and the power!!!

Im considering getting another 55k or a 65 bi-turbo for the summer. What are your thoughts?

Thanks

Why spend £4k on one to then consider buying another ?

Still a 100k to fix... and most cars go wrong, just that yours cost more to fix due to it being one of the finest on the road.

What actually went wrong?

After spending 4K surely it was time to keep it.
Or are you admitting that it had more faults?

You have sold a good car ( possibly) and are now back in the lottery.

My uncle used to say no one sells a good car, buy a second hand car and you are buying another mans problems.

I don't know what others do when choosing a particular model but personally i do a lot of research(this forum for me as mb's are my choice of car now)as it helps to pinpoint potential problems/known faults for the model you are interested in(if you use the search facility you will see there are known faults for cl's of the year of your car which other cl owners on here have posted about).Another thing worth remembering is a car that was around £100k new is never going to be cheap to repair but in your case having full mb service history & only one owner should help minimise any future problems, with this in mind i personally would keep the car rather than buy a simular sized engine car that could end up costing you more £'s(my opinion only, good luck with whatever you decide to do).

Keep it, the devil you know and all that.

The car had a problem with the air suspension so I repaired it at that cost and then a Friend in the trade told me that the CL's alot of electrical faults so would be best to get rid before having to spend anymore, plus doing alot of Miles I decided to PX for a diesel which i still intend on keeping, just want something for the summer and want it to be AMG :) im also considering CLS55 or SL55 if the CL has too many problems.

Hello again,i'm having trouble understanding your philosophy on this, you say you want to get rid of the cl because you've spent money on the air suspension & you've heard they have lots of electrical faults yet you are thinking of changing it for a cls55amg/sl55amg:crazy:(the cls definately has airmatic though not sure about the sl but both will be simular to maintain/repair as a cl,just my opinion).

CL and SL has ABC (active body control), CLS has Airmatic. Airmatic is less complicated and less expensive to fix.

Hi

I Sold the CL55 last year and I am considering buying another AMG, Its not just the suspension I am worried about. I was told in general the CL W215 had alot of issues. Do the SL and CLS also have known faults? Basically what I want to know if buying another AMG should I expect loads of faults

REI,

I've had both a CLK500 and a CLK55 AMG, I had problems with both but under all that they were very nice cars, EVERY make and model of car has issues and the internet has opened up a whole can of worms to drivers so they can search and see what problems other drivers have had.
You will always get a "friday afternoon" built car which will take all of your hard earned and then on the other foot you will get an absolute corker.

Be it a Ford, Ferrari or Mercedes or any other for that matter, they all have their niggles.. Buy what you want and enjoy it, too many people buy these performance marques and then winge about how much they spend on them. (myself included)

Yes the CL has suspension issues at 1k a corner to fix but so does the SL and S class.. When i bought my current car, I researched as we all do into what scary stories are out there, if I went on what I read, I'd be riding a bicycle......

Do your homework, buy the best for your budget and enjoy... life is too short....

+1(great post bald guy);)

Make sure you can afford the upkeep !! As mentioned if you research the car there should not be any surprise .

Life is full of surprises!

You cannot budget or plan for a surprise...

Not completely but you can run a car thats less likely to give major suprises. A E220cdi will not cost the same to maintain as a CL55amg. One is a lot more fun than the other, one is a lot cheaper to maintain.

£4k, its all relative, its loose change to some on here, to others its more than the cost of their car. £4k on a CL55amg is not bad going, given the age of the car in question. I'd have probably kept it if the bills were able to be afforded and/or chosen to be afforded.

Perhaps the answer to the OP is a more managable car, like a CLK500? Nice reliable engine, lots of shove, a lot less to go wrong....

You can also take into account that which will almost certainly fail and will need replacing:

ABC equipped cars for example.

The struts will fail.
They are £1000 a corner.
If not done previously, it is only a matter of time.

Same with the oil cooler problems on the 1999-2001 V12's.
