Good evening folks,

Just a quick question, i currently have a W205 C220D which was purchased on PCP and due to go back in November.

The brake pad sensor light has come on and after checking it out i need the rear brake pads and discs doing.

Now my question is do i need to have genuine mercedes brake pads and discs? I have checked my documents which does not mention anything and after calling mercedes finance i was advised it is preferred if i used mercedes approved parts but the advisor did not clearly answer my question!

Hopefully someone out here has an answer!

Thanks in advance

Doesn't a car on PCP require dealership services?

At worst buy genuine MB parts and get them fitted by an independent. At best get an independent to supply and fit non MB parts.
MB quoted circa £450 for pads and discs on my wife's 2011 A class , local tyre depot supplied and fitted, inc wear sensor, £135. I'm told it doesn't effect the mobilo life breakdown service.

Genuine mb pads and discs don't have Mercedes written on them, they usually are made by ATE or similar which places like Euro car parts stock so just buy them from Euro car parts online when they have 30% off promos..

Not much difference in price between original MB pads and discs and those from ECP, so I would go for MB every time. Get them online and enjoy a 10% to 20% discount off the MB RRP.

ECP Are currently doing 30% Off

The last set of fronts I fitted a few months ago were £120 ish for pads and discs from ECP. Mercedes wanted £220 ish.

There's no such thing as original mb pads and discs, MB don't produce pads and discs, best option is to buy online and brands such as ATE, brembo or textar

Nobody thinks MB or any other marque manufacture their own service items...

But when MB put their name to a pad or disc you know your getting the correct specification and quality each time.

Unless going on track there's no reason to deviate from that supplied by MB..

if the car is going back then get them from ECP with discount.

services have to be performed by dealer, but things like brakes and pads are not considered a service hence any garage can put them on

There is a reason to deviate from mb parts such as pads and discs - 1 and only reason = "extortionate prices"
Why pay mb prices when you can buy similar or better spec for much less? No brainer

Prices for service items like pads and discs are, generally, not that different from 3rd party offerings. Certainly not "extortionate"..

This whole argument hinges around "similar or better spec". As no one outside MB know that spec it all comes down to subjective assessment.

When buying from MB you know it will be correct both in quality and specification.

Yes one can and in specific situations, should, buy alternatives. Track day events for one.

Doing so, just to save money? Perhaps one should reassess one's budgeting priorities...

Erm I don't think so : s
Take a look at my "mb engine oil" thread..
It might be the right spec BUT its quality is terrible!

Mb branded oil I used recently instead of my normal shell helix combined with shell nitro, noticed straight away the poor quality of mb oil hence the low price of £35 for 10l.. never again back to shell

How do you define the quality?

I've read the thread you mentioned, nothing but subjective conjecture.

Many well respected brands sell their products under a different label at reduced price, just to maintain sales. There is no quality or specification difference, simply a dissociation from their established, higher priced branded product.

How do you know that MB branded oil is "poor quality"? Did you have it tested?

I suspect you are imagining its poor quality.

As far as I know MB-Branded parts (including discs) carry a 2-years warranty, so it's a good idea to stick to MB parts as long as the price is reasonable.

kam09, your issue with the oil is incorrect viscosity, nothing to do with the oil brand. I have been using MB-branded oil for a number of years now and it's fine.
