Mercedes Laptop Diagnostics

Hi all,

I know this may sound like a "noob" question. That's probably because it is & I am. However, can anyone tell me if there is any way of me doing my own diagnostics on my C180 W202 using a laptop and any sort of diagnostic kit? It just seems a little cumbersome having to go back and forth to specialist garage just to get readings each time you attempt a DIY fix.

There is, but you may not like the answer. You can buy a STAR diagnostic outfit as used by MB Main Dealers but it will cost you around £1000 for a basic setup. This will communicate with all the modules and units in the car, and also let you enable certain 'features' which MB charge as optional extras.

The generic OBD2 code readers will read the basic engine codes which are common to all cars, but will not necessarily read the manufacturers own add-on codes for things like the transmission, HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) and safety systems for instance.
