Its been a year since my spare key on my ML would not operate the central locking.

Dealers wanted £150 plus 1hrs labour for another key.

So yesterday I manged to get hold of some info so I can try and Re synchronize my key fob.

Details

1) Make sure the batteries are ok
2) Turn the key to position 2, then to position 0 and remove.
3) With in 10 seconds, push and hold the lock button while pushing the unlock button five times.
4) release the button and press any lock or unlock or unlock boot once.

5) Bingo it worked. :bannana: :bannana: :bannana: :bannana: :bannana: :bannana: :bannana: :bannana:

Saved myself a few quid on the remote key fob.

Hopefully this will work for others too. Good Luck.

Will this procedure work on a key...say from ebay?? or have i got it all wrong?

No definately not.

Keys from ebay are no good. They are programmed for another car and as such are useless.

I am currently in contact with ebay to try and get these on the banned items list. I have to tell 4-5 people a month that they've wasted their money when they come in to get a cheap key that they've bought off ebay 'Reprogrammed'

So is it best to swap your keys over every now and again?

Keep both 'charged' up?

key problem

Yes,probably a good idea to keep both keys in use.The 150 and an hours labour is not for re-syncing the key but for authorising a new one in the security module,.TUSCALOOSA!

I know this is an old thread, but just wanted to say thanks properly as I thought I was off to MB dealer today after changing batteries, but the above worked a treat on the brand new unused spare I got with car tucked in back of bookpack :rock::rock::rock:

I dont suppose anyone knows how to code a mini key?

You go to the BMW dealer and bend over.

If its just lost its memory then:
This is from Autodata

Programming
When

Key added or replaced.
Key battery replaced.

How

Method 1:
Press lock or unlock button 4 times in succession.

Method 2:
Switch ignition ON and OFF.
Within 10 seconds press lock and unlock button in succession.

Not true... If your key is dead you can swap the main chip into the other keys board... If you are good with a shouldering iron that is.

The worry with modern BMW and Mini keys is that the VIN (and other service related data) is readable from the key via any dealer - just plugs into a little socket attached to the service personnel's PCs. Given the VIN the dealer can look up who owns the car, and thus where the car is likely to be parked most of the time and of course the registration number if it hasn't been changed.

So when you lose a BMW or Mini key, you need to go and have it disabled, as it has all the info needed on the key for someone to find out ..

Wifes key started playing after getting the batteries changed at the last service and eventually packed in today. Didn't really fancy paying main dealer prices for a new key but tried this and worked first time:bannana:

Many thanks
