I visited my sick A-Class yesterday, where it is being put back together following a road traffic accident (I was required to produce three forms of ID to enable the workshop to obtain new door locks from Mercedes).

On chatting to the manager on how the repairs would influence the 30 year body warranty offered by Mercedes (as part of their Mobilo regular servicing regime), he offered this perl of wisdom: that in their experience, as an approved Mercedes body repair agent, Mercedes do not honour the body warranty beyond 8 years.

This clearly doesn't seem right to me; so I wondered what others' opinion of this revelation might be.

You have to remember how specific the Mobilo warranty is. The 8 years seems to be the amount used in the "goodwill" calculations for those corrosion repairs that don't fully comply with the very restrictive Mobilo conditions.

Read the "rust" threads here and on t'other side, especially regarding W203's. It's very hit and miss whether or not the known rust issues are addressed, either in full or in part, by MB - in my case they offered a paltry 10% towards the £800+VAT they said the repairs would cost! Beyond the car's 8th birthday it seems you have absolutely no chance of claiming under the rust warranty - the 30 years is not worth the paper it's printed on as far as rust is concerned.

Yes read my thread "Get your car checked before it's to late" on the bodywork forum. I had two weeks left of my 8 year body warranty and all my wheel arches are being done next week. Beyond that I'm not sure I would have much joy in getting these issues resolved FOC. ;)

Not so. People have claimed under the 30 year Mobilo and been successful. But most have been done as goodwill as they do not meet the strict conditions of the 30 year guarantee ( Full Mb service history and rust from the inside out -not just surface rust).

It's still "hit and miss"!! My car has full MBSH, the bottom of the offside doors is bubbling (paint undamaged so must be from inside, not stone chip), both rear wheel arches show light rust on the front inside edge. MB refused to do the repair - as I stated, the best they would offer (and I got ratty with Customer DisService by email!) was 10% goodwill contribution if I had the work done by the local MB approved bodyshop - who wanted £800+VAT - I declined. Others have been luckier - in many cases it seems to depend on the dealer pushing your case for you.
