Afternoon all,

My day was filled with excitement about an hour ago when my new custom mercedes number plate surrounds arrived as well as my new grill from germany!

Have a look at the pictures and let me know what you think. I have managed to secure a group buy of these plate surrounds, so if I get enough names the price gets cheaper and cheaper. Let me know if you are interested via PM so I can see what numbers there are. I paid around £28 for the pair, but that was for a single set. The more numbers the cheaper they are.

I know, they look cool. I going to ride with them and see how much attention I get from the police. Fingers crossed all will be well, otherwise I might have to swap back to UK plates or maybe might be able to get away with covering the "D".

Nope. Why?

By being slightly stupid and assuming by your nuckname that you might be a police man, I get the feeling that you would not only stop me but give me a pretty hard time?

I know that police in different areas are different about certain things. I am just wanting to see what happens thats all. I am not intentionally trying to "make" my car look german in order to avoid prosecution by speed cameras etc. I just think that it looks original.

To be fair, i think the Ebay auction is for just one plate surround ;)

Abbos, I know you have different model than mine but your grill does look good and I am looking to replace my W210 with one but don't fancy paying over the odds. Can you tell me where you sourced the grill from? If it was a German Ebay seller could you let me know who you used as I have found a few selling the grills but wasn't sure on reliability etc.?

Cheers in advance

Which is great, in most things, but not in registration plates.

They have to be how they have to be. There is no room for making your car look original through it's plates.

I don't mean to be rude but if you fitted red front lights and white rears your car would look very original but you wouldn't do it as you know it would be illegal. So why do it with your number plates?

Bit of a sore subject with me as I can't believe what people think they will try to get away with and then call us petty when we stop them.

Plus your car will fail an MOT test with those plates.

Sorry Plodd, but you are mistaken.

Number plates are not required for an MOT. :) Next time you give someone a 7 day fixit for his number plates, most MOT stations will pass the vehicle without even seeing it.

But fitted number plates are now a part of the MOT test and they have to conform and not be defaced or cracked.

These will fail.

Most dealers fit these surrounds when fitting plates to cars sold. They are cheap and if you ask they might even give you some for the free advertising.

nictry: Check PM

Plodd: Thanks for the feedback. Would the plates be legal if I covered up the "D" or is it a matter of not being reflective amongst other things? I would like to find out if there is anyway I can keep the plates on the car, even if I have to modify them or whether they basically need to come straight off?

Just so that you know, the plate surrounds were £28 for the pair inc p&p. Like I said if anyone does fancy a set, let me know as if there are a few names they will be a bit cheaper. They make the plates look much neater without any screws etc.

I can't see the pics :( I wanna see what thay look like!

Please be aware that regular plastic plates won't fit in those frames without modification, they are too thick! The metal plates fit perfectly though.

Think not, certain parts of the plates are checked on an MOT test.
I think you'll find the letters have to be equal thickness which the plates we are discussing aren't.
Very petty I know and I feel the chances of these plates drawing any unwanted attention would be very small despite my previous, tongue in cheek comment. I should have used a ;) rather than a

The plates are perfectly readable and are standard in many other European countries (who also have speed cameras etc!). If they contain the correct details and have the correct flag on them I don't really see why anyone should be stopped for using them. They are very difficult to tamper with, the lettering is stamped into metal so no typeface-tricks will work and they will probably last longer than their multilayered-plastic counterparts.

You never know, within the next few years we may be made to use stamped metal plates in the UK to match our European friends...

Well, we seem to have to do everything else Brussels says
Working Time Directive: what a load of c**p  (IMO of course)
