mercedes specialists prices

There or thereabouts. It would depend on the state of the head, do the valve seats need re cutting, do the valves need replacing (burnt)? so you have to have a little leeway.

Are you 100% sure the oil leak is coming from the head gasket? There are lots of potential places for leaks to occur at the front of that engine e.g timing cover, camcover for starters. How much oil is being lost- how often or after how many miles do you need to top up and by how much? Do you envisage keeping the car along time--what's the body, transmission like? Realistically is it worth spending a lot of money on a 95 car? What's the rest of the engine like?Is the bottom end sound- what's the cylinder compression like- Are the piston rings/bore wear still acceptable--- these are all issues which might determine whether a recon engine might not be a better bet. You are in the fortunate position that the car is still a runner so you have a bit of room for manoeuvre--- get a few quotes-explore a few options-- etc 2000 euros is definitely over the top head gasket price wise IMHO.

ill take some pics when i come back from work of the oil leak, the engine i have is m111,the car rattles somtimes from cold on start up,so im thinking the timing chain needs looked at,rust wise, i replaced the two front wings and drivers door because of rust, ive done a compression test a couple of monthe ago,and the compresssion was good, ive done an oil change about 4 months ago,and it has lost about a half a litre, i didnt add any more oil to it as it just looses it out of the head gasket

M111 engine, oil change? What mark on the dipstick does the oil come too?

hi ian,the oil is just over the half way mark,

lets face it the car is worth about £1000 ish - it is not worth doing the engine work imho. It could well soldier on for another 5 yrs like this and you will have had cheap motoring. The danger of spending a grand on the h/g is that next month something else will go ....and then when do you stop.

There was a post a while back about a non-merc specialist setting the tensioner incorrectly resulting in a broken camshaft a little later. Poster was fobbed off when he asked about the squealing noise, a little later the camshaft expired.

I think that answers my point then. Any good mechanic can do a head gasket, but you need specialist knowledge or the working docs to consider the ancillary stuff and do it right ?

hi there,im in a bit of a dilema,my w202 has a head gasket leak just above the timing chain tensioner,in going to ring a mercedes specialist tommorow to get a price to do the job, what im going to get done is the head gasket and the timing chain, as it rattles sometimes on start up from cold, the oil leak from the gasket leaks a lot more than it did before so its time to get it fixed, how much do yous think itll cost me,my car has 125,000 miles on her,if you where in my position would you get it done or just buy another car its a 95 car,

Headgasket on a 111 should be around the £350 mark all in, add anothe £50 for the timingchain, but any garage should be able to do the work for you, it's an easy job.
