Are you expecting £1255 worth of (eligible) problems in the next 12 months?

When I had my S Class my warranty claims were in excess of £7k one year.

So, could be a waste of money or..............maybe not!

From the school of thought "prevention is better than cure" my previous ride was an Audi RS6+(sorry) in 4 years of ownership I claimed almost 30k worth of warranty work:eek: Paid almost 2k a year for warranty.Cheap at half the price!!

Imagine having to cough up out of your own coffers:doh:

No further questions your honour:bannana:

I have just done another year with no problems. I have probably saved over £10k over the last 7 years not bothering with paid for warranties, despite doing 20k miles a year average.

i think the first few ownership its worth havinga warranty, get everything checked and repaired during that period .

after that, bank the cash and repair things when they go wrong!

i have probably spent £1500 in repairs over the last 3 years, as long as im paying less than what warranty costs.

Have just had a quote for my low-mileage A Class (A160 BlueEfficiency Avantgarde SE) for a year from November when my three-year MB warranty runs out. £381. I am tempted.

We extended the warranty on the ML63 on the date this thread started.

Yesterday we were off on birthday shopping trip for Mrs D when all the pre-safe features kicked in: the pre-tensioners in the seat belt pulled us back into the seat, windows closed, seats adjusted, etc. Happened about 10 times in the two minutes it took us to find somewhere safe to park.

Mobilo eventually recovered the car the dealer, and provided a hire car 6 hours later, which was disappointing but that's another story.

This morning the dealer called to say the rolling circumference of the tyres had changed, and caused it. The car requires a re-set and ECU re flash apparently, but not covered by Tier 1!

A month later and the Tier 1 documentation still hasn't arrived, but I just checked inline, and sure enough re-programming is excluded, so bear it in mind if you have Tier 1 cover :(

Mercedes warranty is probably one of the worst I have seen.

I would much rather go with the tier 1 from Warranty Direct who cover wear and tear as well.

i have got teir 1 but so far and hopefully i wont have to use it i just pay i belive £60 ish per month

Interesting! When I first got my E55 4 years ago it had a Tier 1 equivalent Warranty with Warranty Direct and I had to claim for a hub and wheel bearing assembly caused when the wheel bearing failed at 70mph a week after it was serviced. The failure occurred on the M3 at about 8:00 in the evening in the overtaking lane, and I had to pull into the hard shoulder which took about 4/500 yards. As a result of that, the wheel bearing welded itself to the hub assembly requiring a complete hub replacement.

To cut a long story short, Warranty Direct refused to settle on the basis that I had driven the car while faulty, causing further damage over and above the wheel bearing, which in itself was not covered as it was a wear and tear item.

Needless to say, some intense correspondence followed as wear and tear items were not fully documented in the policy, nor was there any indication of what period/mileage constitutes fair wear and tear. In the end they agreed to settle on 70% of the bill and I took out a new Tier Warranty with Mercedes.

Since then, any item found faulty has been replaced without question. But, and there is a big but - the prices for Tier 1 have risen dramatically over the past four years. When I took mine out it was at a rate of £60 per month and has continued at that rate since. When I enquired a year ago on the price for the same warranty for the SLK55, a figure of £1800 per annum was quoted, and this year its risen to £1950 despite the car being 4 years younger and considerably less complex than the E55K.

Their top level cover does cover wear and tear, it didn't used to though.
They cover a percentage of parts at various age/mileage and always cover 100% of the labour based on main dealer or indy, agreed when you take it out.

I have had them replace control arms because of worn ball joints before.
Never had a problem with a claim.

You pays your money and makes your choice!

Tier 1 is pricey but pretty much settles straight away, external warranties seem to be the big issue as demonstrated above. I would have argued that moving the car was a safety requirement required by the police and needed by yourself. When it comes to safety there should be no argument but a Mercedes tier 1 cover never seems to get to the stage, it is just done :-)

But that is the point, I expect a tier 1 warranty to cover everything, no questions asked, as if it were a brand new car, it does from Audi, it does from BMW, but with Merc I see post after post where claims are refused.

I was talking in response to Bryan but as you say they do now cover wear and tear.

My brother had an Audi where a claim was refused but I can't remember the circumstances now. On this (and other) forums you do tend to see the negatives and I wonder if some people could post if they had a positive result from a Mercedes Tier 1 warranty claim?

Huh? You've lost me there?

I was saying that Mercedes warranty seems a bit crap, so much is put down to wear and tear.

If I pay top dollar for a 3 year old 'approved' car one of the reasons for doing so is because I expect the warranty on it to be the same as buying new, and with Mercedes it is far from that.

It seems Audi also have wear and tear get out clause;

"Items where the lifetime of the component is or can be influenced by driving style and external factors will only be considered under the terms of the warranty for a period of six months or 6,250 miles (whichever is soonest). Beyond that limit, the defects must be classified as wear and tear and will not be covered by the Audi warranty.

Components subject to wear and tear are as follows:
• Brake linings and disc pads
• Clutch release bearings
• Clutch pressure plates and centre plates
• Tyres
• Wiper blades (wiper rubbers have no warranty owing to their conditions of use) • Seat and backrest covers
• Floor coverings
• Spark plugs
• Batteries for key fobs and alarms
• Light bulbs
Mechanical adjustments after six months or 6,250 miles are also excluded from warranty cover such as:
• Adjustments to doors, flaps, boot lids, bonnets, sunroof • Brake adjustment
• Clutch adjustment
• Clutch adjustment
• V belt adjustment
• Ignition adjustment
• Headlight adjustment
• Steering geometry adjustments • Wheel balancing
Filters, gaskets, lubricants and sundry items are only accepted as part of a valid repair."

But the point is Audi tend to cover it anyway as they appreciate someone who has just bought a used car shoudl be looked after, where as Mercedes tend to play by the rules a little too much, a bit too black and white.

What was the thread last month with the guy with the approved E280cdi and the inlet port valve?
That was typical and a disgrace.
