Mercedes w210 E300TD
Hi everyone,

I've been following mbclub for quite some time - although I never bothered to get registered. Recently I've crashed my pride & joy 1998 E300TD saloon. So I need to get another one - and it has to be W210 model.

Can someone tell me the fuel economy of E320 petrol? I've been looking at a few E320 cdi but they all seem to have done silly miles and have rusted arches or wings. So I am thinking to go for a well cared for petrol model instead.

What is the around town tank range for E320 petrol and also on motorway? & how reliable are the petrol engines? I'll be doing 12 miles daily to and from work - 8 on dual carrigeway and 4 urban. I don't particularly have a light foot & do about 10k miles a year.

Thanks :thumb:

Sorry to hear of your crash and demise of your E300TD and welcome to the forum.

Regardless of the fuel driving the engine most W210 cars will have corrosion to the wings, arches, tailgate, spring perches etc so be careful when inspecting

Although not directly comparable my C320 petrol on an 18 mile commute of mixed A roads and short motorway / dual carriageway returns 26mpg, factor in at least 10% less I imagine for the W210 being somewhat heavier.

Around town I have seen it drop to 20mpg although motorway runs take it to an easily achievable (and brim to brim measured) 36mpg

See here for a similar thread:http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/general-discussion/62709-w210-e320-v6-economy.html

The petrol engines are very reliable, smooth, quiet and with good performance, my indie tells me that he has never known a serious problem with the V6 petrol engines, as long as they are looked after they seem fairly vice free.

Good luck.

Thanks for your reply.

I know about the corrosion of w210's. Had both front wings replaced & rear boot lid painted only 3 weeks before the crash for £650. I also fixed the rear window regulator myself and paid £600 to get the EIS replaced from mercedes. I averaged approximately 29 mpg on the diesel (brim to brim) - probably due to booting it everywhere.

I'm thinking, factoring in higher cost to buy diesel, and the bigger premium paid for used cars, I should just go petrol. I'm guesssing it would cost me £400 more to run per annum. Are there any timing belts to be replaced in the petrol engines?

Your 36mpg on the motorway sounds really promising. I will often be driving up to Glasgow from Lancaster.

No timing belts, they are all chain driven.

The 36mpg was over about 200 miles of fairly clear motorway with the cruise control on at an indicated 75mph.

My current true average is around 27mpg with mixed use. When I measured the 36 mpg the trip computer was showing a little over 38mpg.

The 320 petrol engine (M112) is a very reliable unit. I have a W203 C320 other than a faulty CPS (crank position sensor) it's never missed a beat. MPG has been covered already but yes factor in the reduced cost of fuel and purchase price you shouldn't be too out of pocket. Also many 320s will have higher specs too.

Well, looks like thats me sold then. Going to search for a nice clean E320 petrol.

On another note, if anyone is selling a E320 CDI then give me a shout.
