Hi
I have taken my B Class into the Mercedes dealer today as the brake warning light came on not long ago. I now need new pads, but also tell me that I need new discs. The cars only done 23,000 miles, so I'm surprised I need new discs. Has anybody else heard or come across this issue?

Many thanks

From what I've read on various braking related topics it seems to be quite common on mercs, IMO it's a rediculous mileage to need discs. Mine are showing similar of needing changing at 27k. I think 40k is their recommended life.

I just sold a focus ST with 55k and all brake discs were like new.

Not much help I know, just to let you know your not alone.

Id be wondering why even the pads need replacing at such a low mileage. Last time I had new pads and discs was at 70k. Do you always drive hard and late brake I wonder. If not there may be another issue in my opinion.

I don't see how anyone can give a recommended life for components that are designed to wear out - especially for brakes? Surely this will depend on driving style, motorway vs town, London vs Stuttgart, load carried, etc?

Wow, was this the first time the brake pads were replaced on your car (at 70K miles)?

Yes the rears on a vw bora then the fronts at 80k.
The local VW dealer also gives a percentage brake pad life left at every service, which is useful.

Service on my MB in a couple of months at about 45k so will be interesting to see what they say about the pads.

Mine were noted as 10% worn (90% left) at 40K miles - but the discs were rusty as heck as I hardly use the car, and when I do it's for long motorway trips.

Anyway, this doesn't help the OP. You should be able to see the pads and see how worn they are. Trouble with discs is they're sacrificial now so they wear out too. Even if they're passable at the moment, they probably won't last through another set of pads - the amount they're allowed to wear is pretty small (usually a mm or so).

My old VW needed brake pads changed after 80k miles and our Hyundai was at 88k miles and was still strong pads even when i sold it.

Wongl, your quite right, "recommended" is the wrong term, in this case for my car it should have said ...expected.
