The missus is after a car. Budget 7k tops, nothing outlandish etc..

I have been shopping around. I have driven a 1-series 1.6 petrol and seemed ok. The other choice is a Mini Cooper One.

The mini's are noticebly cheaper. I personally think the 1-series is a v.nice car..

i dont know

If your wife is over 40 or an estate agent then the Mini is fine, I have never liked the 1 series It just seems pointless....next choices please!

With a budget of 4-7k and it having to be 2004+ what other choice is there?

Throw me some recommendations.

A car to her is just getting to and from A-B.

Honda Jazz. Now that the new one is out you should be able to get some serious bargains.

Mini and 1-series are just overpriced tat surrounded by a healthy dose of BMW marketing hype.

Golf, A3

or, cheap as chips, I've got a 54 plate 2005 Polo she can have for £3.5k (daughter's gone to Hong Kong for a year) I want off my drive!

She is a girl. . . . so she will love both. . . . or anything with a soft top.

Donza - was in the same situation and got a Smart.

Very good finance deals on at the moment, great little car that she'll fall for, and its a Merc (kind of)

Cheers. I have already ran the smart idea by her. She does not like it..

That is a seriously cheap car! I'll ask her about the Honda Jazz

I have a Golf for the Missus, much more practical than either the Mini or the BMW, I personally dont like driving it because I am too tall for it, but she loves it.
My brother has the A3 and loves that.
At the end of the day it is personal choice and the opinions here are personal, so if it is to be a Mini or a 1 series then as long as she likes it then who cares!
Does it have to be practical? The Mazda MX5 is always popular.

My ex wife had a Mini Cooper Park Lane, it rode like it had no suspension at all. Awful thing. Probably as much to do with the rock hard run flat tyres as anything else.

Never driven a 1 series BMW

My ex loved her Megane Scenic and if I am honest - so did I.
Its got a fantastic view of the road - almost as good as Range Rover. And if you get the diesel - economical as well.
I dont expect many - if any - to agree with me here, but its a wonderful car. So practical and versatile. Worthy of consideration.

my mrs doesn't drive... :( when she does learn though, i'm due lifts for about 4 years :D

Mini everytime over a 1 series, more fun to drive for anyone, avoid a CooperS for that money too thirsty, A Mini One will suffice and there are some great bargains to be had.

My Brother's friend is selling a A140 for about £4k if that's of any interest.

My Dad has an A140 lwb as his day to day car and its actually quite a nice car to drive.

Between the Mini and the 1 Series I have voted 1 Series, the Mini is ok, but the BMW is like a proper grown up car and you wont feel silly driving it.

1 series or maybe the last of the e46 BMW's. Much nicer cars than the mini and RWD. Golf, A3 also good solid cars.
