Hi

I am thinking of changing the brakes & discs on my ML. However is there any special tool required for the ML because I have never changed pads or discs on a Mercedes.

Any help will be appreciated

If you can use spanner confidently, you'll have no problem - no special tools required, just something to knock the pins through - a thin punch.

If in doubt though pay someone else to do it. Did it myself first time, dealer did it second time, local garage did it third time.

Which year is your car? If it's a facelift model, this is the best guide I know of:

Hi

I have another question. On the rear brakes, do you have to wined the cylinders in the rear brake calipers back in or do you just have to push the cylinders? Also on the front from the above link, is there two cylinders on each caliper at the front on mine? I have a MY03 ML270 CDI

Back and front don't need winding, Just push in. Remeber to undo the cap on the brake resovoir.

The Ml270 will also have two piston on the front.

Hi Mercedes cozy,

I am located about 15 minutes from Heathrow, where do you get your car serviced?

Send me your VIN or Reg and I will see which you have.............Thx.

IIRC, all facelift cars have the Brembo 4-pot calipers - two pistons each side. These will have a grey matte finish, with white Mercedes-Benz lettering.

Pre-facelfit cars have 4-pots only on the ML430, and IIRC they have the usual initially-shiny-but-goes-rusty-and-nasty finish.

Either way, you can push the pistons back providing that the caps off the reservoir - watch out that it doesn't overflow though, you may need to siphon some off. A long wedge of wood should be ideal - a screw driver can be a less forgiving!!

Hi Bobby Dazzler,

Thank you vey much. Does that mean then the rears have 1 piston each or 2?

Jdokal

No problem. I think the rears are twin piston.
