ML270 AMG Woes - My first MB! - Maybe my last!!

Cheers!

Hi All,

Thanks again for all the words of wisdom. Updates .....

o Got the headlamp washers going. I tried to pop an extra 'O' ring into the body of the washer where the metal cylinder sits, but no go. Eventually got them working without leaking by judicious use of plumbers tape around the top of the cylinder, and gently (Yeah! Right!) tapping them into place to ensure a seal between the metal cylinder and the plastic housing. Had the bumper off and on about 5 times ... now an expert in removing and replacing ML 270 AMG bumers covers. : ))

o Replaced the ATF fluid. It was BLACK and smelt bad. Real bad! The pan tray was mercifully clean and no swarf. Cleaned up the gunky remains of the burnt fluid, refit the pan and replaced with fresh red stuff. Gear changes now silky smooth.

o Just ran the wife to pilates. Limp home mode still active, but we've only been running back and forth to the village. Decided to take the scenic route home and get her right up to temp. Just before taking the last turn into our road i pulled over on a whim and stopped and restarted the car. Suddenly full power back!! Pulled like a train the last half mile. Will let her cool down and see if limp home mode is re-engaged when I go to pick the Mrs up.

o Central locking from the fobs still not working. If I perform the resync operation then the fob will work for "one time only" action (lock or unlock). After this it's dead again. The fobs are obviously working ok, but I suspect the AAM is the culprit. Removed the fuse box and reseated all the connectors. No joy, I suspect a visit to the garage is in order for this one. Can live without it for a while, but it *really* annoys that this doesn't work.

Cheers,
Ripface.

Good update. It is getting there!

You may need to change the MAF if it has never been changed.

Monitor the lack of boost and see how you go.

Hmmmm

Picked the ML270 up from the garage yesterday. The mechanic has replaced the MAF sensor, and removed and cleaned the EGR as both had faults logged with the ECU. He cleared the faults and ... the damn thing still has limp home mode, and the EGR fault came back as soon as he started it.

If I get the old bus warmed up properly, stop and restart, then all is fine. Guess the next stop is the Mercedes Dealer. Hmmm, was hoping to avoid that ... our local dealer is Arnold Clark and I've heard some horror stories!!

I've been trying to work around the remote central locking issue, and am trying to understand why the "lock" button on the centre console locks and unlocks all the doors but if I lock the car with the key in the drivers door, only the drivers door locks. If I open the car with the key in the drivers door then all the doors unlock. At present if I want to lock up I have to reach in and use the central console switch to lock the doors, then lock the drivers door with the key.

I'm not all that bothered about the remote fobs not working, but it's a bit of a pain having to lock the car in this way. Any clues peoples?

(Please don't say replace the AAM!!!)

: )

Cheers,
Ripface.

There has to be a good MB independent near you! I am sure other members on here can contribute.

The manifold flaps may have been become clogged. It is common for the manifold and the port shut off motor to become clogged on the 270 engine. It is a comprehensive topic on here.

Time to polish up me flaps

Thanks Dokalj,

I'll surf up the flaps issue and give it a whirl.

It is your AAM me thinks. They will usually re synch then drop out again. What type of egr/ boost fault codes are being logged? You could have a possible blocked kat. Look for signs of black soot at the joint of the first kat. Alternatively get the engine nice and hot and probe the kat with a heat laser.

Not the AAM!!

Hi,

Thanks for the pointers, I've booked the old girl in to the Westhills Garage who have a STAR diagnostic tool. Hopefully it will give more detailed info regarding the problemo.

With regards the AAM, hmmmm.

Is the manual key operation controlled via the AAM? I suspect that turning the key in the lock activates a microswitch which sends a signal to lock/unlock the doors. Because the centre console button successfully locks and unlocks all the doors then the solenoids are all ok. The key will unlock all the doors and the boot. The key will only lock the drivers door.

Is it likely that there is a microswitch issue here?

Cheers,
John.

(Just trying to come up with a scenario that does not involve replacing the AAM)

:D

Update#2

Well, after three weeks at the garage I finally have a working truck back. The fix? Oh! The mechanic removed a "CRPower" tuning box made by PSI Motorsport, and since then it's been running fine.

So after replacing the MAF, cleaning out the EGR, having a new Vacuum pump fitted (£££) and having the ECU sent away for repair, the fix was to remove a tuning box.

I'm against people who use invective in boards but .... FFS!

Now I just need to sort out the last remaining niggles. Oil leak, CV joint, and no cruise control or remote locking. I'm gonna pull the AAM apart and see if there are any obvious faults on the PCB. I've had some success with replacing blown caps and burnt resistors, so you never know. Will keep updating if I have any success.

Phew, getting there!!

Cheers,
Ripface.
