Ml270 limp mode

Well it's finally happened...

After nearly a year of faultless driving it has now gone into permanent limp home mode.
My last service mentioned that the linkage had come off. So looks like am gonna have to do the manifold modification.
Also mentioned in service was the gearbox electrical plug was leaking. Could this cause limp mode?

your egr is most likely clogged up, don't think the plug leaking would cause this.

Is it gearbox limp home or engine?

Pretty sure it's engine. Will only rev to 2500 and is very sluggish between 3rd and 4th. It's like
I have no turbo at all.

You need it plugged in firstly.

It's going to be a while until I can get this sorted. Will driving it in limp mode cause any further damage?

It can't really do any good. I wouldn't. If it breaks down then what will recovery cost you?

limp mode home sends the transmission into 2nd and reverse gears only\
done so to protect the transmission from damage but still allowing you to get to a nearby safepoint,
