Hello

My father inlaws ML270Cdi has decided not to start, its a 2000 model, and he's just been away for two weeks in it and all has been well.

He came to start it the other day and it ticks turns over but nothing, no lights etc on dashboard.

Any sugestions? a frind of his has said to chek the fuel filters any idea where they are and would that cause an issue?

Thanks

Will ask him, he's charged it up and tried it do they just die when they go?

Thanks

Hello,

Update he reckons battery is fine as all lights work etc? he has also been told by a friend that it could be water in the fuel filter?

Is this possible, and if so how so check where is the fuel filter.

Thanks

Water in fuel? That's unusual surely.

Can you see fuel in the clear lines? Possible injector fault?

I remember changing the thermostat on my C270 (same engine). Managed to snap one of the fuel lines. When I replaced it, had to crank the engine for about 45 seconds to get it to fire.

Apart from that, I'm stumped!

You dont check battery by checking lights. Lights need less power then starter on heavy desel engine. There might enough power to light some bulbs but not enough to CRANK it.

I would suggest to put jump leads or charge it more as sound you have thick when you turn ign. There is no poit to worry about fuel if you engine dont even turn.

Sounds like battery goosed -if one or more cells have failed, you will be able to get soem charge into it, but the voltage will drop rapidly once you take the charger off.

Charge it for a few hours, take a reading with a volt/multi meter.

Leave off charge for 30 minutes and check again - if its 11.4 volts or less it probably won't start the car.

Once you do get the car running , check the voltage again across the battery terminals - you should see around 14V if the alternator is healthy, maybe more if its working hard to charge the battery.

Most battery/tyre depots will do a drop test on the battery - this should confirm whether its goosed or not.

Costco are about the cheapest place fo a quality (BOsch Silver series) battery. Halfords do a calcium one for about £100 with a 5yr no quibble warranty. Varta Blue are also very good quality.

Thanks all will report back.

I've not see the car myself in its current state just relaying what he has said.

I will tell him to check the battery properly :)
