Morning all,
just a bit of info from me re my recent thermostat change on my 2010 ML63AMG , symptoms and resolution etc, if it helps anyone
I always have the engine oil temp screen showing on my dash. As those of you with an ML63 W164 know, the engine oil temp flashes until the temp reaches 80 degrees. And the advice is not to do any hard driving until engine is over 80 degrees ( although I like to get well warmed up and more towards 95 plus before putting my foot down ).
Anyway, recently I noticed the car was running colder than normal, and taking longer to warm up, particularly on some of these colder days. Was not too bad around town driving, still getting up to between 85 and 95 degrees but on the motorway at 70 it was hovering around 80 degrees and sometimes dipping below to 78 or 79 degrees, with the temp reading then flashing accordingly.
So, I made an assumption most likely the thermostat was stuck open and pondered whether to change it myself however it just looked a bit tricky for my capabilities involving temporarily moving the power steering reservoir with plenty of potential for me to mess it up and snap something in the drive leaving me in a world of pain
Gave it to local Merc specialist Mike and Ian at Star in Reading who concurred with my thoughts and replaced the thermostat no problem and only charged an hours labour (thanks Star!) and now all is good, the engine warms up quickly, and is now running between 95 ish and low 100s in this colder weather dependent on what I’m doing.
Hope that helps someone
Cheers
