C350 CDI om642 correct engine temperature?

Yep. I will phone someone and just say I want it changed instead of asking for advice (I was being polite, I don't want to appear arrogant but I suppose that's the way it has to be 😊 )

It gets up to temp (about 80) driving slowly or just left to tickover - cools down at speed (i.e. constant speed on the motorway) to 59-64 roughly, according to iCarsoft

Wind passing over the radiator knocks the temperature down at 70 mph , anything below 40 mph probably won't. It's what happens when a stat is opening too soon. Stick some cardboard with a few holes in it , Infront of the radiator and I guarantee you it'll reach 90 at 70 mph.

Watch this , maybe show it to your mb tech when you see him.

Diagnostics back from Merc dealer technician regarding my thermostat:

"There are no errors and the sensors and wiring are fine."

And what about the fact it runs cool on the motorway? I left a picture from the data logged in the code reader showing the water and oil at 60 deg or so.

"I can't go off that as it's not our readings. I drove around town and it was up to temp"

FFS :wallbash:

"And our health check says you need all new tyres and brakes"

Get away!?

At end of tether now. Is this proof we're living in a simulation matrix and this is the rather obscure glitch? 🫤
How much were you charged for these words of wisdom if you don’t mind sharing?

Tbf I didn't think it was too bad (noting that they said the same as every other mb specialist and considering I got a courtesy car and could drop off early and collect late, so convenient for work), it was about 200 for diagnostics (also asked them to check something else in addition) and 370 for a full gearbox service (decided to get that done for piece of mind at same time).

They quoted 1250 to do the thermostat but with no guarantee it would have the desired effect on engine temp (don't ask me🤦).

So late yesterday I phoned a Halfords Auto Centre which seems to have good Google feedback and, instead of my usual non-patronising way of explaining the symptoms and hoping the chap would say you need a thermostat instead of 'that sounds fine mate', i said "my thermostat needs replacing how much is that?" He quoted 480. So it's booked for 28th. Only now am slightly concerned about a non-specialist chain garage working on it. Is it straight forward compared to other makes?

Thanks for all the replies, very much appreciated as I was beginning to doubt my own judgement .

I hope the mpg improves afterwards otherwise my '4 cylinders or less belongs in a motorbike ' opinion will be forced to change 🤔😄

If I'm looking for an approximate price for a job I tend to use clickmechanic, once the car and postcode are in then you can select a repair/replace and get a price by adding it to the basket.

£1250 good god . I'm in the wrong trade . 🙄

Your mpg will drop significantly,as the car is running on colder maf calculations not Hot ones

Watch the German butcher at work here 😂 he changed his in under 23 minutes.

For some reason I can't quote OneForTheRoad's post #46, but if it were not for the fact that one mounting bolt in the thermostat housing is impossible to remove without removing the long shiny alloy pipe next to it, which in turn requires a couple of seals to be replaced as well, replacing the 'stat would be a quick d-i-y job. You don't even have to drain the coolant if the car can be parked facing up a slight slope, or with the front wheels on ramps.

£1250? How much do they charge for brake pads, £200 a corner? I assume you won't go back to that dealer...

The newer stats apparently have a slot nowadays where that bolt sits , still gotta get the old one off unfortunately .

Mother of God !!…..£1250 ??
It’s a £100+ part , with an hours Labour ?
I’ve got the earlier om642 , 2 years ago I paid £34 for a Wahler stat from AUTODOC ,I know your stat is more expensive. It took an hour and that was the first time I had done it .

Had my cars thermostat changed last year by local Merc truck dealer

Steady 90° showing now at all times, mpg at 40.6 over 7000 miles, up to 47 mpg on a run

Best £300 I have spent on the car
300 sounds an absolute bargain. Are they anywhere in Hampshire by any chance? 🤞

I used to do a lot of my own work, but there's two reasons I don't anymore. 1, roughly one in every three times a bolt snaps or something else goes wrong on a supposedly simple job and as we know we'll end up on here saying please please please can somebody help me my 20-minute job has turned into three weekends... 😔😄 And 2) I no longer have a garage or a driveway and I don't like working at the pavement 😔

If whoever does the thermostat and the charge pipe has to come off , would be a good time to do the fuel filter and drop 2 air filters on, it's a 10 minute job. Mercedes wanted £1300 for discs and pads all round on my glc350 , I bought brembo parts from euro car parts for £570 and fitted them myself. Seriously find yourself a mercedes independent and keep away from a main dealer.

For every person who says 1 hour there'll be another who took 3 weekends due to a snapped bolt/other calamity 😄
