Mobile 1 engine oil viscosity?

That's from an official US MB PDF that has been circulating on the internet (regarding the launch of the W203 facelift in 2004):

'– Synthetic oil according to sheet 229.5 is required
• Mobil 1 0W-40 is recommended by MBUSA'

BTW, MB Temple Fortune in London used Shell Ultra Helix 0W-40 on my w203 in the last service. The dealer before that used Castrol 5W-30. I guess they all do the job

hi mark, am pretty sure shell ultra helix ultra is 5w40, might be wrong thought..

You are not wrong...

The one I bought at a Shell petrol station to top-up from the 'Min' mark after the service ( ) was indeed 5W-40.

The service advisor however (and the bill) said they used Shell Helix Ultra 0W-40 - this is possible because some viscosities are not available in retail package but only to garages in barrels.

i personally believe mobil 1 0W40 is probaly the best oil to use if you have a well maintained engine, i.e TBN 11.3, viscoity index 186, flashpoint 230 C, HTHS 3.7.

I would love ive any members find an synetic oil with better figures.

Can you please explain the relevance of the figures you quote, stating if a higher or lower value is better?

Do you have any data, such as oil analysis results from engines in service to support your ''mobil 1 0W40 is probaly the best oil to use'' assertion? If so, and I expect you to have, will you please present it here?

True, there are many types of Mobil 1. In addition - some types of Mobil 1 are not available in Retail package, but only in barrels for garage use. If your garage filled up with Mobil 1, you may find that you can't top up with exactly the same oil....

Again true, but Mobil do say that Mobil-1 is miscible with other oils, you can add mineral 20W-30 if you must (provided it's MB 229...)

What oil should I use in my 2002 S320 CDi with only 79K miles on it ? My independent Service guy says 10/40 Semi Syth. is OK, The last service I had done from Dealer said must only use Mobil 1 )/40 Fully Synthetic.. Need some help here guys..NICK

Which grade would be best for my 2002 S320 CDi ? The independant Service guy (Ex-Merc) says the 10/40 Semi Synth. is fine but the dealer used to use Mobile 1 0/40 Fully Synth. Please clarify... NICK

Any oil that meets MB 229.3 or 229.5 minimum. At this time of year, a 0/30 or 0/40 would probably be a good idea

Red Line Synthetic Oil

Red Line Synthetic Oil

'Makes the Exxon/Mobil/Royal Dutch Shell/Valvoline/Fuchs/Kendall products
as if T'were Equine Extrusions.

The "big" selling feature of Red Line is that they produce Ester based synthetics, not POA or hydrocracked ultra refined dino juice, which is fair enough because an Ester based synthetic does perform better than POA's in extreme conditions.

There are other producers of quality Ester based synthetics:

Opie Oils - Ester Synthetic

And here are the oils handily cut by MB spec:

Mercedes Engine Oil

whats 'POA' mean?

i find this very interesting but I as a computer scientist I know nothing of oil technology.

I have to say, oil seems to have become very confusing over the past few years with different manufacturers specifications and all...

If the AMG engineers recommend using Mobil1, it must be for a good reason. Personally, I wouldn't use anything else except an oil which would be superior and also recommended by MB and AMG.

an oil which would be superior and also recommended by MB and AMG.

Problem there is that there may well be a better than Mobil 1 oil out there that doesn't have MB approval because MB, to grant approval, insist on being told the formulation and the manufacturer of the oil wasn't prepared to divulge what anyone would refer to as their 'trade secret' ...

any problems switching from mobile einz 0w40 to a similar synthetic oil from Castrol?
does Castrolia have 0w40 oil?
if not, what viscosity is the closest to mobile uno 0w40?

peepol say castrol is wayyyyyyyyyyyy better than mobile einz? :dk:
is dis true?
